Anyone tried the Peavey vypyr 120/60 tube amp yet?

These are the new peavey amps that are coming out right now, i'm curious to know how the tube models sound.......anyone tried one yet?? It all sounds good on paper with the features and all, but would like some reviews from ppl who have it, or at least tried it.

If so, how does the sound/tone and feel compare to a real tube amp. I read a lot of bad reviews on the non-tube vypyr models. But i'd like to know more about the tube models.

I just realized that the tube amps haven't been released yet. So i guess that is why noone has a review yet.

But according to main music stores (*******, sweetwater, AMS, GC etc...) they are expected in January-Feb.

I tried the $99 combo. It was ok, a little harsh probably because they dont come with very good speakers but i guess it was comparable to a line 6 if not a little less in the tone/vaule department.

Really? I always thought the line6 15 watter sounded like a swarm of bees lol. First time I played through a vyper 15 I was blown away by it's warm-non-fizzy tone.

I really like line6 pods for recording. But when it comes to the amps for value/money, vyper wins hands down IMO.

I bought myself a vyper 75 for Christmas. Hopefully I won't be too lazy and actually get some clips up by the end of the break .

"They also have both 60- and 120-watt models that pair digital front ends with tube driven power sections." ah sounds cool. at last. I haven't seen that combo (not that I've really searched). the Line6 Vetta's always drew my attention, but I always was reluctant of the power section (and speakers) of that top and combo. This could be a different story for Peavey indeed. cool.

The Peavey's are good amps, much better than Line6 stuff. I gave Line6 a chance and was very dissapointed.

Re: Anyone tried the Peavey vypyr 120/60 tube amp yet?

I guess the big question will be is will this amp be better overall than the Spider Valve?
And is peavey planning to do updates to the firmware where you can update the amp, like you can with the Spiders.

Upon glancing at the manual, i noticed that on the peavey, the Jsx model only has two channels where the real Jsx has three.....i think peavey picked the crunch and ultra channel to be the models on the peavey vypyr........this could be a drawback, because the clean channel is a great clean channel on the real Jsx that many have raved about.

Re: Anyone tried the Peavey vypyr 120/60 tube amp yet?

There are firmware updates for the Vypers just like the line6 stuff. But the process does seem kind of tedious.

Some are complaining that the Vyper amps are noisy, you can read all about it over on the peavey forums. Supposedly the firmware updates are reducing it, but whatever. I'm too lazy to fiddle with that so I'm gonna stick with it stock until I feel otherwise. None of the noise can be heard while playing, and only maxed out gain settings at higher volumes seem to cause an un-expected amount of noise. I know it would probably drive some nuts. It woulda killed the deal for me a couple of years ago but since then my tastes have changed. Still, I will admit that the line6 is a much quieter amp, much less hiss/fuzz/hum/whatever.

But as far as a total review of Vyper vs. a spider valve, I've never done a side by side comparison, but I've spent a lot of time with the Spider Valve in stores because I was once saving up for it. For less than half the price of the cheapest spider valve combo, I feel my 75 solid state Vyper gives me a lot more. The spider valve's higher gain settings do feel more natural than the Vyper's, like cleaning up better when you role back the volume, but they don't sound as good IMO. I imagine the lack of "real tube" feel comes from the un-adjustable noise gate in the vypers. But this like the noisy-ness is something peavey is working on in the firmware updates.

Clean is much much more dynamic, clear, and bouncy feeling and sounding with the vyper. Very tube like. I actually traded in my Fender hot rod deluxe amp through a local dealer because the Vyper had a better and more varied cleans to my ears than the fender!

I have no idea how the Vyper takes stompboxes, but I'd imagine it would do quite well considering how dynamic the clean channels of the amps are. I'd do a video review but I'm not sure how well my camera would pick up the audio. I may give it a shot.

Another thing to consider is how well the Vyper sounds cranked up. Mine is a SS version, but supposedly they sound really good cranked because of the Transtube technology. I haven't turned it up past 3 yet lol.

Re: Anyone tried the Peavey vypyr 120/60 tube amp yet?

i bought a Vypyr 30. Its been nothing but trouble. i brought it home and the next day when i turned it on, nothing happened. i had to turn it on and off at least three times to get it to come on. then, it would turn off while i was playin and what not. and, it IS noisy. its got lots of stuff on it, but if it doesnt work, then whats the point? i took it back and the guy said that they have had lots of returns on the Vypyr 30 becuase of that same issue. Maybe the tube versions are different... I dont recommend the 30. good luck with the others.

Ditto, I just bought a vypyr 15 for my truck so I can play when I am on the road. No other little amp in the store sounded anywhere near as good.
Awesome little combo for $99 nothing can beat it.

Re: Anyone tried the Peavey vypyr 120/60 tube amp yet?

Well I was thinking about these but they too look complicated beyond what I'm willing to do for my sound. I just dhate programming an amp. Turning knobs and such is no problem but saving and editing and so on on an amp is too tedious for me. And if it's noisey or has the problems EVO Giant experienced I don't want anything to do with one.

Personally, I'm excited about the new Roland Cube 80x. It's got a solo boost/tone setting function that can be used as a thrid channel or as a solo boost and an built in looper. It can power other speaker cabs too. I think the Cube 30x sounds amazing for the price and the fact that it is a modeling amp witout tubes. So I'm stoked that the 80x will probably have the power to gig easily. Roland is pretty reliable too for their price range.

This amp is good for anything. It has good tone for funk, has a great warm tone on the clean and the overdrive is more classic rockish like AC/DC and The Who, the gain is O.K. you may want a distortion pedal. Thats what i play, my friend has one and i thought it was o.K., but i fell in a new one CRATE V33-212 and its my baby. So.. All in all i give it a 8.5. the amp is fairly noisey though... might want a noise reducer? personally i dont like downloading and editing and what not...too much for me, i like simple and original. Like the Fender '59 Bassman is great

I have the 60 tube and sorta love it. Still want a "true" tube amp.
