Are Peavey Rockmaster really that good......
Hey guys just had a question about the Peavy Rockmaster preamps. Everyone who has one on the forums says how great they are and yet how inexpensive they are. Now lets do some math:
nice
tube head
(Mesa, Marshall, Peavy 5150) = $1100
tube combo
2x12 ( Peavy XXX for instance) = $900 - 1000
and yet the Rockmaster is around $100 - $200 (thats the price of one on evilbay right now), throw in a peavy classic 60/60 power amp for $200 (again thats the $$$ of one on evilbay), and you're looking at at $400 for a full set-up (minus the cab of course).
compare this to a normal head/cab set up, or other rack units like the jmp-1 ($500 - 600), or the Triaxis ( $1000), and it seems too good to be true.
Do these things really sound as good as their competition, and if so why are they so cheap?

They are good units for the money, it has that unique peavey distortion, just like the MP-1's distortion is unique and the JMP-1 is distortion is, well Marshall. I don't think nearly as flexable or toneful as the JMP-1 or Triaxis though. You could make it a bit better with a BBe and EQ but by the time you get all that you might as well get a JMP-1.

Re: Are Peavey Rockmaster really that good......
I had a Rockmaster, and loved it. Worth every penny. MORE than enough gain, too. It is 3-channel, and each channel has it's own loop, plus a master loop, making it very flexible. The reason why it is so cheap is because it flies under the radar, and not alot of people really know the wonders of them........but they are beginning to.........

Re: Are Peavey Rockmaster really that good......
thanks for the info guys...................
but here's my dilemma.............
right not I've got a line 6 spider II half stack, and I hate it. it sound good at bedroom volumes, but turn it up to play in a band situation and it sounds aweful. i mainly use the "metal" channel, which i think is supposed to be a marshall like sound, b/c the "insane" channel is totally useless, very muddy sounding. i cannot, however, get a sound that i'm happy with...... distortion is very buzzy, muddy, unpronounced, its hard to describe...... but i'm not really sure if its the head or the cab...... everyone seems to say that the line6 cabs suck so maybe thats my problem.
anyways............ i dont know if i should try the rockmaster and peavy 60/60
rack setup
with my cab, try a different cab with the spider head, or start looking at something completely different

I'd go with the Rockmaster - 60/60 setup. What speakers are in the cab, cause I thought a rep told me they came with Vintage 30s, which most seem to rave about.

Re: Are Peavey Rockmaster really that good......
so you think that the cab is ok, cause it seems like, and maybe this is just the amp, that the speakers are crappin' out once the volume goes up
as a side note, what do you guys think of the Lagacy 2x12 cab b/c its only $350 brand new on Carvin's site......
