Ooooh... I'll be watching this thread, it always seems to trigger a proper shytestorm around these parts.
I'm personally of the opinion that "Steve's hands" or "Joe's hands" are the most crucial "missing link" in any of these tonal equations. I will now prepare to have my head bitten off.
I can give you a great Drew Peterson tone, if you want it:
Me ==> Ibanez UV7PWH (stock, aside from a Tremol-no) or Fender USA Standard Strat (
gold lace sensors, graphite nut and saddles,
pearloid pickguard, and my super-duper top-secret "worn" finish, virtually impossible to duplicate

) ==> sometimes a Dunlop Crybaby ==> Mesa Nomad-45 2x12 (JJ high gain preamp tubes, early breakup poweramp tubes) ==> bit o' delay and verb in the mix ==> You.
Works like a charm, no matter what I do this setup always sounds exactly like me.

EDIT - Frank, ya beat me to it!
