Asymmetrical Speakers?

Hello people. I am currently thinking of building a 2x12 speaker cabinet for my Marshall MG. I once saw a review on a Matchless amplifier and saw that its speakers are not of the same model. Are there any benefits with using asymmetrical speakers or is it better to just buy two of the same model, if ever I push through with this project? Thanks in advance.

I think the whole idea behind mismatched speakers is the difference in the way they interact with the signal from the amp. If they react differently you just get a better textured tone due to the layered differences.

Re: Asymmetrical Speakers?

I do that. My amp is a Soldano SLO100, and after much research, I settled on
Eminence GB12 and V12 speakers. To me , with a Soldano, they sound much
better than the Celestion G12T75 speakers that were in my Marshall cab. In my ADA
2x12, I have one of each, and in my Marshall 4x12, I have two GB12's on one side
and two V12's on the other. I really like what I'm hearing by combining these!

Plan on doing some experimenting. It might take a few trys but it's worth it to ming that perfect speaker combo that fills out your tone. When you find it, your sound will be bigger and have more depth than whatyou can get from a same-speaker set-up.
I do this a lot for recording because you can mic each speaker and mix n' match for the perfect tone.

Re: Asymmetrical Speakers?

Well if you think about it, a single speaker can't make every single little dynamic sound. If you have different models that can handle the different frequencies better then sonically the tone will be more robust.

I have always wondered why speaker companies and cab companies don’t use a 2x10/2x12/ and one 15 together. The 15 can add thump, the 12 inch speakers are the standard and the 10s could add high end sparkle.

The trick is just adjusting what frequencies will go to which set of speakers, other then that it should sound much better then an all 12 inch loaded cab.

ISP technologies make an active subwoofer for guitar systems which i don’t know why it hasn't caught on (especially for metal player). The sub lets the guitar cabs work better because the cabs only get the middle and upper range of the guitar sound.

It's great for live aps. But it's tricky when recording. Usually people, even live, mic one speaker but if you have mismatched speakers you're going to need to do more to get what you're hearing, through the sound system or recorded. But that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
