Attenuator's
Can someone let me know the secrets of attenuators. Are they worth it? Can they damage me equipment if run properly?

I use a
THD Hotplate
. No damage yet and it's been at least a couple of years.
I'd elaborate more but I think this has been discussed already. Try doing a quick search fro "attenuator", Power Soak", "THD" or "HotPlate".

I checked it out, nothing really clear to me. I understand that it takes the signal from the amp, and then brings down the dB, I think, and then takes it to the speakers. Is this right? Also, does it still take the same wattage from the amp to the speakers? If someone finds a thread this is already discussed in, let me know.

That's right, you place it between the amp and the speakers enabling you to crank the amp and listen at low volumes with the tone of a fully driven amp. Good enough for
Paul GIlbert
....good enough for me ;-)
I paid $240 for a new 16 ohm HotPlate and I feel it is well worth it.

Yea it sounds like it is. I would love to get my amp true amp tones out when playing a small club, or more importantly when recording. How do you know which impedence to purchase?

Usually on the back of your amp you'll see the setting. A lot of amps have switchable settings (4, 8 and 16).

I play through the 8 ohm setting, so therefore would I buy the 8 ohm?

That is correct.
What is your current setup? A head and a 2X12 cabinet?

Yes, however, I'm looking at buying a 4x12. Would that make a difference? I think that my head only has 4 ohm, and 8 ohm.

I am not positive on this, but check and see if the 4X12 cabinet is 16 ohm.

One is 16 ohm, the other is 8 ohm. Do they make attenuator's that can be either of the two, or is it just one or the other?

Sure...the Marshall Power Brake is switchable. The THD Hotplates are all different units.
