Attn: Cakewalk Pro Audio users - avoiding popping sounds on

I'm using Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very good with it. *I simply don't have the time to go over many of the features and test them.

Here's my problem. *I recorded guitar tracks and now have gone back in to clean up the tracks by deleting unwanted noise etc. at the beginning and end of the clips. *Problem is, when I do that, the end of the clip produces a *pop* instead of just gracefully moving into silence. *Is there a way to soften the edges of soundclips that are edited so there isn't this popping noise?

Thanks for your help.

Paul, in CW9.xx you can assign envelopes to fade in and out automatically if you so desire. Select the wave you want to edit, then double click it to open it in the wave editor window.from there you should be able to assign the envelopes you want or just truncate the pops.
You can email me directly if you want more in depth.

a trick I use is to destructively edit the track by using the fade functions for both the front end & the back end of the tracks that are truncated. *Try zooming into the view BIG TIME to enable selecting super tiny bits of the track for this function & it works great.

This saves the volume envelopes for more "general" slopes.

my 2 cents...

Hi your problem may very well be that you are not cutting on the zero volt line. *See the sound *wave *actually shows how much the speaker is being pulled in or out. Meaning if you cut so that the sound does not start or stop on the zero line the speaker will either be in or out and therefore having to snap to a new postion causing a pop.

Now to cut on the zero volt line you will want first mark the spot you what to cut at then go to the audio veiw option and use zoom until you can see the actual line form of the wave. *Now you will see a line which at the side of the screen will have a one and a arrow pointed at it. This is the zero volt line. Now locate your marker and cut at the nearest point to the marker that is at the zero line. *And no this will not change the place of your edit because you are veiwing the wave down to the very sample and depending on the sample rate you are recording at there are either 44100 or 48000 sample a second. That leaves lots of room to play with. *

I hope this helps and if have more audio questions just ask, IT's my job

Yeah, I think Gary has hit the nail on the head. I'm sure it's a similar problem with all audio software. Cut on the zero crossing point.
In Cubase it is dead easy to do cross fades to get around the problem.
