I'd look at a 5 string for the sake of versatility because when it comes to recording, you don't wanna limit yourself. And it's really not hard to adjust to(I started on a 5, now play a 4 for live/practicing.) but I still use a 5 string for recording.
As far as brands...IDK...fender is a solid brand, but I think it's fair to say they're more geared to a specific style. Ibanez might be more versatile. And Ibanez's 5 strings are really really good if you decide on that as a good option.
I have a peavey bass and I've really been happy with it thus far. Rock solid, and sounds awesome through my yorkville bassmaster 400 head and 4x12 cab. Then again, anything is better than my squier lol.
