Basswood?


What the hell is basswood? I mean, what does basswood actually mean? I cant find any reference to what tree it comes from. Anyone help?

Ah, I did the mistake of googling for Ibanez Basswood, which didnt tell me much.

Basswood is called Tilia in latin. It's a genus containing a couple of different species. I believe that american basswood (tilia americana) is used in Ibanez guitars. Maybe you would recognize the tree by the name "lind" or "linden"? It's called lind here in Sweden, and I believe that same name is used in english (old?).

Linden and Lime are also names for basswood.

Basswood for guitars has good and bad to it. The good is that notes ala shredding come out very clearly and articulatly. And it's not too expensive. The bad is that basswood lacks in the resonance department. That's all I know.
