bedroom playin part 1!need an amp?

well i got my mesa v-twin! WOOT!!

I'm gonna toy with it a bit before i review!

but I'm looking for a new combo amp!
I'm going to invest in a rectifier recording preamp quite soon but for now I just want something with some nice clean tones, doesn't have to be hugely versatile or anything as I'll be using a dd-6 and the v-twin for my fx!
any ideas?

im back to bedroom playing again, and the tsl stack is sold thankfully!

I'd love to hear what you think of that, I'm seriously thinking of just getting the head, since it's so crazy cheap.

Re: bedroom playin part 1!need an amp?

I've played a combo in a local music outlet, so I know what they're like. They've got a great old school tone (vintage Fender Champ) and take pedals very well.

I've thought for ages about whether to get the head or the combo, as I've got a 2x12 and 4x12 I could use a head with. However, from what I've read the 5w are better suited to single speaker as the tone gets too boomy and flabby with more speakers. They also perform better with cheap speakers I believe! Rather than get a head, then a 1x12, the combo seemed the much better option. More portable too, and better value for money.

The head is useful if you're going to swap cabs around for different tones when recording etc. Not really that much use to me as I'll be using it as a practice amp.

I just picked up a 20th anniversary hughes & kettner, 20 watt class A tube amp for practice and I am really impressed, its got really nice tone even on low volumes, and it sounds like alot more than 20 watts when you crank it. but its easy to carry around. It was 650 bucks , so its a little expensive but worth the money............mo

Carvin MTS3212 is my practice at home amp.. Its loaded with Groove Tubes, Celestions, and has the best clean I have ever heard on any amp. Its also got a 50/100 switch on it.. and for $799 its a monster with the ability to grow.

Atomic Reactors are great little amps that love POD's, and have a great all tube sound.

hhhmm lots of ideas!

I'm not actually too impressed with the v-twin!
its got great tone and I could see it as someone else's love child, but it's just not what I'm after!looks like I'll have to fork out for a rectifier after all!

oh do I need a power amp if I'm buying a rectifier recording preamp and putting it through lets a 100w marshall combo?Wil the marshall act as a power amp?

Look for a combo with fx loop. Just plug the out of the preamp into the return of the loop. You'd bypass the combo's preamp section and use only the poweramp section.
At bedroom levels you could go with a solid state amp, but if you want to use it at higher volumes, I'd suggest a tube poweramp section.

Re: bedroom playin part 1!need an amp?

If its strictly bedroom playing then I would stay solid state as tubes are just too much for bedroom useage. Unless you decide to go for a nice Laney LC15 or something like that. But I would stick to solid state myself.
You can't go wrong with a Roland Cube. Whether it be the 15, 30, or 60. Or even the micro for portability. I would probably go for the 30 if its for bedroom use. That way if you do need some extra "oomph" its there for you.

i've got one of those too, i agree it has an awesome clean channel. i bought the amp almost 2 years ago when i was playing mostly metal and really liked the gain channel, but now i play more andy timmons, satch, etc and i have trouble getting smooth tones out of it. i think it might be the celestion g12t-75's in there that are making it harsh.

which celestion speakers do you have and is the gain channel on your amp very bright too?

sorry for the hi-jack, it wont happen again

Re: bedroom playin part 1!need an amp?

^^ Celestion G12T-75 speakers are pretty harsh! If you search for my tone test, some quick clips I did when I got my BKPs Rebel Yells installed to my Les Paul, you can hear the difference between them and the Classic Leads. I had the mids dimed on the G12T-75 clips and they had scooped mids, but I had the mids at 5 or 7 on the Classic Leads, I forget and it had a lot of mids.

I just got a Soldano Supercharger, the Soldano side all tube distortion pedal (but it won't work as a preamp like the V-Twin) and it's absolutely great. Sounds like it's an extention to the amp, literally.
