Best amp for...

What is the best amp for Metallica metal & classic rock for a band? We play in bars. I like combo amps the best, but I'm willing to reconsider. I have a Marshall JCM2000 100watt combo 3 channel. I'm thinking about selling it, if I can find the ULTIMATE. Maybe I already have it.

Your ears will tell you as when I personally think of 'Classic Rock' and Metallica I hear 2 completely different guitar tones.

It's certainly a split, to be sure.

I swear by my Nomad, and it can definitely go back between "metal" and "old school rock and roll" but even then, well... Your JCM2000 will give you awesome crunch tones, and while the "Lead" channel can do metal, it's not very Metallica-y.

What kind of stuff does your band play? Do you REALLY need to be able to cop authentic Metallica and, say, Led Zep tones with the same rig?

Re: Best amp for...

real old Metallica was done with Marshalls, the later stuff was done with Mesa's and double tracking with different amps and such. Now it's anybody's guess, I see Diezels a lot but in the studio it could be freakin anything. I'd say if you're going for a Black Album or Master of Puppets tone get a Mesa Mark III and run a boost pedal in front for extra gain. A good boost pedal would be a clean boost that doesn't add any gain or eq just volume.

Re: Best amp for...

I can get a great metal tone from my legacy with a distortion pedal on the clean channel, for classic rock you can't beat the overdrive channel on it.

Well we do more classic rock than anything else. However, I think the idea of having all in one if possible. I guess I should be getting a better metal pedal. Any suggestions for a pedal that can do Metallica metal with the JCM?

Re: Best amp for...

Pick up a Digitech 2101 preamp and run it in your effects loop. I can get any mesa sound I want with mine. I have a pretty good clipping tube preset also for classic rock. The lead sounds you get from a 2101 have to be heard to be believed.
