best amp for metal on a tight budget?

I need a new amp for my new Ibanez RG1451 model. I'll be playing in drop B tuning and I want a metal tone to melt faces....

However my budget is low. I've got my eye on the Peavey VYPYR practice amp (15 or 30)

Any suggestions??

Re: Best amp for metal??

There's no such a thing like best amp/best guitar etc for this or that style.
It's all about personal tastes and what is good for one could be crap for the other.
Low budget means less options.
Try to focus on quality and not on style so save money and buy something better.
Any amp with higain distortion (even with mid gain cause you could push it with dist pedals) will do the job.

The Vypyrs are very good for a metal-head on a budget.

Re: Best amp for metal??

Jep, the Blackstar HT range is a great idea! I played the HT-5 a lot at my friends place, we boosted it with Ibanez TS-7 or Digitech Bad Monkey. It sounded awsome, i pressed out a lots of gain from it.
I personally use ENGL amps, since few years a Fireball 60. I still havent found (doesnt mean, there isnt!!!) as brutal, tight, yet full sounding with lots of clarity and tons of gain amp. I just love it and wont get rid of it anytime! And its not even that pricey thing actually.
If you add a bit to the price of the vypyr, you can get a Blackheart Little Giant Head and the matching 112 cab. Great stuff, it will sound awsome with a Digitech Metal Master. You´ll get brutal tones, no worries! And its a full tube amp, it will be as loud as the vypyr 30, thats for sure! Blackheart and Metal Master will be my home setup too in 2 months!

Re: Best amp for metal??

As a Vypyrr 15 user myself, I can definately give you a thumbs up on the distortion tones.

Is it Dino Cazarez (Fear Factory) meets Rob Flynn (Machine Head)?

No.

Is it good enough to get you by on a budget?

Absolutely.

The Recto Model screams. I love the 6505, but it feeds back too much for my taste.

They *sometimes* have audio samples you can listen to, to give you an idea.

bugrea 6262 or bugrea 333xl. great heads for ~$550 each. and you can pick up a cheap 4x12 cab anywhere to start off. great low end out of both amps and theyll be way louder, heavier and better than the vyper. and if you cn get one used for even cheaper......

Red face Re: Best amp for metal??

The best amp for you personally for your metal sound is the one you play and it instantly takes you to the place where you zone out!

Try every amp out there that you can, you'll be surprised at some of them. There are amps I hate that people LOVE, as well as amps that I love the sound of but they don't work for me!! It's all very personal!

Re: Best amp for metal??

oh, and that 6262, is not only a copy of the peavey 6505+ (one serious metal monster but $1200) but a lot of people like it MORE than the peavey. and at 120 watts, its an absolute cold blooded killer. and i think the 333xl is a JSX copy which makes it a bit more mid-high range but it will still do metal. i perfer the 6262 though. nice and simple

this might help. different peavey head but the same bugera. very fat, low end tone

Yeah, the title should read "best amp for metal on a tight budget?"

Peavey Vypyr, Line 6 Spiders, Roland Cube 40? My suggestions.

Peace

Mike

Re: Best amp for metal??

I've been reading that the Cubs doesn't really do a great emulation of a Recto, but I've never played on one. The more I play through my Vypyr, though, the more I have been enjoying it. I kinda wish I had spent the additional hundred bucks, and gotten the 30, with the additional stompboxes.

The ONLY thing I AM having an issue with as of late is that I have to front load all my effects - there really isn't any other way. The amp sounds great as it is, but when I try to put something else in the path, things start to go....strange.
