Best Noise Gate and Equalizer?

So I'm in the market for an equalizer as well as a noise gate. I don't want to shell out a lot of money, but I'm willing to pay whatever is necessary for some quality pedals. I was considering a Boss NS-2 and the MXR M-135, but people say that the MXR sucks the tone out and that Boss actually hisses...

So any opinions are greatly appreciated.

ISP Decimeter, but that's not cheap... If you need a noise gate, why not get a good one?

Re: Best Noise Gate and Equalizer?

Yeah I just ordered that. But now I need a good equalizer. The other guitarist in my band has a Boss GE-7 and says it's not that good of a pedal. Can anybody confirm that he just didn't get a faulty one? What about the MXR M-108?

The MXR 10 band is a nice pedal EQ. Best if used in your amps' fx loop.

I have the MXR 6 band in the loop of my JSX as a lead boost. I'm replacing it with a CAE boost in a week or so.

Re: Best Noise Gate and Equalizer?

I would avoid any Dunlop MXR product, they are crap. The Boss GE7 is very noisy but I guess there is some guy out there who mods them to be quieter. I can't recall who does it. The Ibanez GE9 (from the 80's) is even noisier (hiss).

Is the GE7 good though? I just ordered the ISP Decimator so hopefully it'll suppress it.

Yup, I guess you're right because you said so. I guess hundreds of touring pros are using crap pedals because they don't have the cash to buy something better.

Its true, the Boss GE-7 is made from cheap & nasty components (in a nice case), you can easily mod it though and make it sound way better, rip out the 4 crap op-amps which do seem to generate hiss, upgrade those for a few £ from Farnell and just as importantly remove the cheap paper caps and replace with metal film or tantalum caps.

Re: Best Noise Gate and Equalizer?

Guys the BOSS GE-7 is a great pedal i also use it with a noise suppressor a super overdrive a super chorus and a wah and put the eq and super chorus through the effects loop which gives me a giant mid boost for solos.

Re: Best Noise Gate and Equalizer?

Sweeet. I like my two pedals I have so far. But the noise suppressor is sucking some of my sustain. Is it something wrong with my adjustments or should I purchase another pedal like a BOSS compression sustainer or equivalent?

Re: Best Noise Gate and Equalizer?

Nevermind. I think I found my problem. I need to hook it up through the effects loop and not direct through the guitar.
