Bogner vs Mesa Boogie! The final stand!
A Jedi needs a poewr lightsaber. So why do they all have different colors? because it's cool. So my question is. What would you guys choose for an amp? I'm thinking about a Bogner Ubershcall or a Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectofier. Both half stacks. Both have their great points.
Ubershcall
good points
1) it's not made by Mesa/Boogie
2) it sounds great
3) it's a simple 2 channel amp...so just A and B channels
bad points
1) it's $2,800 for the head alone!!!!
2) it only has 2 channels so if you want less gain you gotta use a pedal or a seperate amp (which I have both)
Rectofier
good points
1) it's only like $1,500 for the head, almost half the price
2) not as simple setup but it has the solo switch (I love that) and the 3 channels
3) it also sounds good (IMO) but I still like the Bogner too
bad points
1) it's made by Mesa....I don't wanna be the minority here...we'll all sound the same
I don't want you guys to think the bad points outway the good points. But I'm just curious as to what you'd get...I think I might get an Ubershcall because it's a great amp.

mmm I don't see why being or not made by Mesa is a bad/good point?
My advice would be getting a Laney. A GH100L halfstack costs about USS$1000-1100 here in Chile, maybe less in the US. Maybe not as flexible as those multichannel 'boutique' amps, but the sounds are AWESOME. (right Carlo?
). There's a more expensive 3 channel model too (don't remember the name!) that still cost less than the mesa.
I really recommend you try it!

Very cool question indeed!!!
If you are looking for a great tone when it comes to play
Heavy Metal
go for ENGL Savage 120 instead!
ENGL tone is fat, sharp and powerful!!!
For the recordings of my bands (Cryonic Temple) debutalbum (Chapter I) we planned to use either Bogner, Peavey 5150 or
Mesa Rectifier
.
BUT after trying out the ENGL Savage 120 I knew that it was the perfect amp for our sound. We used it for ALL rhythm and ALL leads, licks, hamronies and solos.
Guitars used was RG3120LTW (mine) and Maxxas M-2 (Leif's, he is the other guitarplayer in Cryonic Temple).
Some artists that use this amp in recordings are Arch Enemy, Scorpions, Helloween, Primal Fear, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, Running Wild, Sinner, Edguy, Motorhead, Randy Jackson...
Here you can listen to how the ENGL amp sounds when WE used it.
(Some of our influences are Iron Maiden, Helloween, Judas Priest, Rainbow, ManoWar & Dio.
But guitarsoundwise we went for a hybrid between Arch Enemy / Primal Fear / Edguy / Children of Bodom.)
Both these clips starts with me playing guitarsolos.
"Mighty Warrior (albumversion)"
http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2009/2009785.html
and
"Heavy Metal Never Dies (albumversion)"
http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2009/2009780.html
Here you can here the amp in a full version.
"King of Transylvania (albumversion)"
http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2499/2499824.html
"Metal Brothers (albumversion)"
http://artists.mp3s.com/artist_song/2499/2499816.html
I hope that it was to some kind of help.
Btw,
Ritchie Blackmore
has a signaturemodel made by ENGL and it sounds really good!!!
Best Regards
Freewheeler
PS This NOT a shameless lame way of getting more plays at mp3.com but more of illustration of why we choose to use ENGL instead...
Good luck in your quest for the ultimate tone!

Bogner vs. Mesa?
That's easy: Rivera.
:-)
Half the price (seen on the 'net for under $900), twice the power (TBR-2SL= 320W), the best customer svc. in the industry (that I've found), and with the right tubes, enough gain to upset those in other area codes.
Only two channels, but toss a DS-1 in front and you've got 3 (kinda).
You're welcome to stop by and try mine. I'll be here. :-)

Go with the Bogner. First off, they are not $2800 for just the head. If your local dealer is charging that, then they are WAY overpriced. Do some shopping and you can find a head for closer to $2100-2200 new, $1800-2000 used range. Second, while the Triple rec is a great sounding amp, it does not even come close to the Bogner. The Bogner has a very nice clean channel despite it being known for its high gain. And its lead channel will smoke the Triple Rec in every aspect. If you play high gain, detuned, even old VH, AIC the Bogner cannot be beat. Its more focused, quieter, tighter sounding than any Mesa I have ever played. Plus, Bogner has some of the best customer service available in the business. The Uberschall is the cream of the crop for high gain amps.

Speaking of Bogner...I'm leaning toward getting a Shiva combo...different bird that the Uber (less intense). I'm in the process of liquidating my rack gear and should have almost enough. The couple times I've played one I've been really impressed...both clean and dirty, and pedals will be handy at putting it over the top.

If you go over to
http://www.fingereleven.com
and click on "finger vision", watch "true professional" and "true professional 2" for clips of a Bogner amp and a Dual Rect respectively. Man, that Bogner has some sweet tone...esp. with that Tele Plus.

hmmm
over the top... you can do that on any decentish high gain valve amp. Just get a boss MT2 pedal (Metal Zone) and plug that into the gain channel...youll get a *bit* more boost than with a DS-1 (infact...you might go deaf immeadiatly
)
I Recomend Bogner. Awesome stuff. Personally i have a solo rectofier. And the Clean channel is pretty sweet considering its known as a high gain metal machine. I bought it (with mesa 4x12 cabs) on impulse cause it was an insanely good price (New, with new valves, £1500 for two 4x12 cabs and the head) and i must say, i think its incredibly responsive, has great tone even at low volume levels, and is a generally great amp for that price range. The bogner amps are that bit better i think, but you pay for it.
But if you got 3grand for an
amp head
...go for it! (you lucky bastard!
)

This is what I do with my
Dual Rectifier
, depending on what I am playing. Turn gain to zero, turn level to midway [50%] set eq to desired setting and let it rip..

Between those two amps i´d go with the Bogner. I´ve played a lot with a triple and hated it. I´d consider other amps as Mesa Mark IV,
ENGL Savage
or Sovereign, Hughes and
Kettner Triamp
or even a Marshall 30th. Hope you´ll find what you look for

Hmm, I agree with Caprile on the point that I dont see why a product being made by
Mesa Boogie
is a bad thing. Ive owned a Mesa DC-5 head for many years and love it. Mesa makes a good amp (expect for the nomads......not a fan of those). Anyway though, If you have the extra money to splurge, go for the Bogner. Boutique quality, and a lead channel that would make you cream your pants. On the other hand, the Triple Rec is a great amp too, and Id love to have one myself. Unfortunaly I cant afford it at the time, let alone a Bogner....yipes
