boss distortion pedals
what exactly is the difference between the boss distortion, mega distortion, turbo distortion, metal core and metal zone pedals? I'm looking to get a dist. pedal but am somewhat confused and baffled.
Cheers

Re: boss distortion pedals
they all have different distortion circuits. Different resistors and capacitors I'd imagine. It's mainly about tone and amount of distortion. I'd say the ds-1 has the least amount of distortion of the ones you listed, and the metal core or metal zone have the most distortion. personally I hate the metal core because of the absolute lack of mids. I like the ds-1, md-2 and mt-2 out of those 5.

Re: boss distortion pedals
Liam, the only thing ive found that they have in common is that they are all crap.
if you can, get along to test a satchurator, its head and shoulders above all of those...
although that depends on what you use it for.
I have a boss SD-1 and it was almost useless before I modded it, I also had a Keeley Ultra modded DS-1 which was an overrated and expensive.
there is some stuff here if you want to study the schematics
http://www.freeinfosociety.com/media...cat=13&start=0
you will see the differences.
mainly replacing the cheapo parts in the boss pedals listed makes the world of difference so expect to have to do that as a matter of course, there are some sellers on 3bay that sell kits along with instructions.

Re: boss distortion pedals
I really like my satchurator, but it's not for everyone. I'd get my hands on one and test first.
Mine is actually bought second hand. Valhalla bought it new and didn't like it. I love it.
But it was a marked change in my approach to distortion. Previously I had used my amp (JCM800/AVT20) distortion only. The satchurator doesn't seem to mix very well with amp distortion. It's best served as the sole source of distortion through a clean to slightly dirty amp. If you are generally pleased with your amps distortion, but it's not enough, you may want to look into an overdrive pedal instead.
Also, if you're looking to play heavy metal, the satchurator may not be the pedal for you.
I typically play instrumental to very heavy rock. Metallica is about the heaviest tone I'll get out of my rig. Pantera type of triple rectifier tones are a bit much for the satchurator.
If that's what you're after, I have heard great things about the Seymour Duncan twin tube mayhem pedal.

Re: boss distortion pedals
The best option is definitely to go into a guitar shop and try them out. A lot of shops have them all laid out on a pedal board so you can A/B them really easily. At the end of the say, one man's poison.....
People who say they are crap may listen to music that you think is crap. And likewise you may listen to music they think is crap. You get the picture.
Anyhow, having said all that, I personally love the ProCo RAT. SO if you do go and audition some pedals, see if you can whack one of them in there for a listen as well.
Good luck,
