I agree. I was never a DS-1 fan...have both the MIT and MIJ, also tried the Keeley Ultra mod...all not to my liking, just too many other great sounding distortion pedals available that I prefer. Lonelyraven, you described it well: "They are gritty with a bit of buzz to them." I guess a big fat tube amp on teh edge might be what salvages them for some.

FWIW, a friend just got the Ulta mod done, and while he doesn't like using it as a stand alone distortion, he loves using it in Ultra mode as a boost. In fact, says he likes it better than his Fat Boost.

Well I have my heart set on getting a Keeley mod now.

I'm still job hunting though, and money is really tight, so it's not going
to happen overnight, but hopefully soon.

I'm also working on modding my Laney cabs for a bit more bass and
tighter response overall. I can't believe how crappy most guitar cabs are
out these days. You'd think they'd try to get away with a cardboard box
and some string for a carrying handle if they could!

I honestly don't think anyone should be paying $500+ for a good cab
these days. But for most, that's the only option we have!

Get a keeley ds1 ultra mod and you won't regret it. IMHO MIJ/MIT is meaningless if the pedal is modded by Keeley.

Yeah, that's basically what I found out about the AnalogMan mod.

I'm eager to try this out now! I just wish I had some gear I'd want to
part with so I could afford another pedal.

LonelyRaven, you've been gone that long? damn... lol. I've been around here a lot longer than I thought, i still feel like a "new guy."

Backing up, I was always under the impression that satch used his DS-1 as the primary distortion source, driving a clean amp, while Vai used it to kick his tone over the top a bit, as a boost. As for exact settings, I couldn't tell you...

I think it's been two years since I stopped posting here. All last year I
was wrapped up in computers again, and didn't spend a penny on guitar
gear...hell, I didn't even buy a pack of strings till I got this Taylor 710-CE
a few months ago!!

I had to take a break from the forums....I was getting tired of the stupid
EBay arguments, stupid who's the best guitarest arguments, and to top
it off, I sold a damn nice RootBeer Jem that I thought was in really good
shape, only to have the buyer do everything but call me a robber.

It really hurt, so I took some time off. I had to get away from guitar
playing (again) and come back with a fresh perspective. It still buggs
me that someone was unhappy with a guitar I sold them, so I promised
myself if I sold anything, it would either be locally or on EBay.

Anywho....this thread seems to be dying out a bit...hopefully someone has
some nice MP3s of their Satch or Vai like tone to share? I see lots of people
talking, but nobody showing us some tones!!

try this: Boss DS-1 + Ibanez TS-9 tube screamer on clean channel
DS-1 = 10 to 11 o'clock, 10 to 11 o'clock, 4 o'clock
TS-9 = 12 o'clock, 12 o'clock, 10 o'clock
set amp EQ = more treble less mid
i got the satch tone that way....

That's exactly what I plan! I mean, I build sub boxes for fun, and I enjoy
building exotic folded horns and such. So a guitar cab would be a breeze.

But honestly, while researching, I find I can get almost as good of results
modding a used Laney cab then building a cab by hand. Plus, considering
I can get a used Laney cab for $150-$200, spend about $15 on screws,
silicon, and 2X4 and come out with something similar to a $500+ cab...
Well that sure makes me happy!

If I can get my sound card setup correctly in my new computer, I'm
planning on recording the way the cab sounds stock, then tearing it
apart and rebuilding it (with lots of photos for the web), and then recording
it again with all themods. My goal is more, tighter bass, and to roll off a
bit of harshness on the high end, and bring out more detail at lower
volumes. Honestly, I don't like cranking an amp till the speaker cones
break up...I'm pretty much happy with a "studio" amp that can get me
the tone I put in and kick it out with low to medium volume but with some
warmth. I think that's why Joe uses the little Cornford in the studio.
I was so very close to buying one when I stumbled across this Magnatone
Twilighter like this one but 2X10"

http://www.harmony-central.com/Guita..._Combo-01.html

More info on them here:

Ibanezer (cool name by the way), I'd love to play with that setup, but
a Tube Screamer is something I just don't have yet. I've been so
obsessed with my DS-1 collection, that I've not bought another pedal in
years!!

You have a recording of that setup!! Share!!

does anyone has the DS-1 and TS-9?
if yes... and if you have a better setup, plz share
i've mess around with these two pedals and the EQ on my half-stack for a long long long long time to get the satch tone... it's close but it's not identical of course. i actually tried EVERY combination (e.g. moving 0.1 on each knobs on pedals and EQ....) i spent too much time on that...
oh by the way... i was using my PGM300 with stock DiMarzio Paf Pro's

hey maybe its been discussed before and please pardon my ignorance for asking, but since ive always been a rack gear guy i was just wanting to know the difference between the japan manufactured ds 1 and the taiwanese made model, i can guess that the japan model is made better but is there any tone difference, im thinking of buying one to run through my access fx loop if thats possible, i also have a bradshaw switching system that i can run a pedal through (or so im told)
