Can this be used as a preamp? Would I be able to run it with a poweramp through a cab?

I see no problem on runing it that way in the case you just want to play at home. I use my GT-6 for home recording and it works fine for me but never use it on gigs.

Yeah, it should sound good straight into a guitar power amp/cab as long as you turn off the speaker simulation.

Yes, you can use your GT-8 that way with no problem. Have you checked out the Boss GT Central website?
