boss harmonizers

I would have to concure on this one. The stompbox harmonizer just did not cut it for me either.
I know you can not expect Eventide quailty from a pedal, but the Boss GT-3 harmonizer (older?) sounds completly different (less digital).

But to compare apples to apples, if you compare the sound of a full octave lower on the harmonizer compared to the octave lower on the Octaver it is 10 thousand percent better and of course if your just doing a quick shred or two and need a perfect 5th or 3rd it is not soo bad.

What would be a good harmonizer on the market in comparison to the boss version.

boss harmonizers

I was thumbing thru the sheet music for Satch's Extremist and found a note that mentioned using a Digitech HM-4 Harmonizer.
I found a used one for $75. *
It's a rack unit, and I was pretty impressed with it's tracking ability. *Harmonized notes needed to be fed thru a mixer to blend better, but was totally useable right out of the box. *Kind of old technology, the unit hummed audibly, but not thru the signal cables, just the unit itself. *Had optional outputs for dry signal, harmonized signals 1 and 2. *MIDI control.
Check one out sometime. *It's well worth $150 IMHO.

Make sure you count out all octave units that are produced by clipping (ie, fuzz octaves). *This effect occurs with distortion by nature of clipping the signal, and with a great mathematical mindf*ck, can produce octave sounds. *Not the same as a harmonizer. *Just wanted to make sure no one was comparing these things, like the Octavia and the other 72 million clones on the market.

I'd love to try one of these out, but I have next to zero cash. *I have a DOD FX-9 processor which I bought solely for the distortion module. *It's strange, I hate DOD stomp boxes, but I love the distortion on this processor. *It's the closest thing I can find to shelling out for a 5150. *In addition to the killer distortion, it has some really weak pitch-shifting but I'm not sure if that's the same thing as a harmonizer. *is it?
