boss metal zone

anyone like or dislike this pedal? i just picked one up, it sounded a bit processed but after turning up my tubes to get a little overdrive and rolled off the distortion level a bit it sounded all right. does anyone else have one of these?

I have o ne that I don't really use anymore... Should've told me you were looking, i'd have sold it to you cheap.

It's really not a bad pedal if you set it right... Boost the upper mids (nothing serious, i think i usually put the parameter and level control somewhere between 2 and 3 o'clock, generally) and don't overdo the gain and it's a great heavy sound. However, half the fun is just tweaking it to stupid positions and generating sounds- it's one of the msot fun "textural" distortions I've ever used, becuase the EQ is SO ridiculously powerful. Sure, it doesn't sound good at ervery position, and in fact sounds downright horrible in many of them, but it's still definately useable for affect. Find a good "normal" distortion sound you like, then spend some time screwing with it- if you ever get into recording, some of the settings you'll find will be great for overdubbing.

I don't know about the other pedals, but I use a MZ in front of my Dual Rec, and as long as you go easy (real easy) on the dist level, it sounds alright. I use mine as a boost and EQ, and I get one of the heaviest sounds I've ever heard. Just be careful with it, and you'll be fine. I'm going to have it modded by Mr. Keeley, though, so it'll sound even better.

The MT-2 is quite different from the Mega Dist (MD-2) and the Turbo Dist (DS-2). It is closer to the sound of the old Heavy Metal (HM-3) or Hyper Metal (HM-3).

I've found that the DS-2 has a much harder and edgy distortion than the MT-2 and that the MD-2 is more about gain and low frequencies. The MT-2 is the only one of those mentioned that has a 3 band eq. and you can shape the sound a lot more than with the others.

I think that the MT-2 works really good if you have a bad amp. It can make a 10W Crate sound like a big dog

haha, it definately can help save a bad amp, but it can also provide some interesting tones with a good one. I can't see myself ever using it as my principle distortion source, but for what it is it isn't bad.

The 3-band EQ is hugely powerful- the thing that eventually convinced me to go for the MT-2 over a handful of other distortion pedals i was looking into at the time was that I could actually dial in fairly good rough approximations of, say, the Pro Co Rat i was A/B'ing it against. Not quite as good, of course, but totally useable.

I'm going to get that mod, too, if I can convince myself to get up and mail it. I've heard that it makes it sound a lot better, but that if you don't like the sound of the pedal to begin with, then you're not going to like the mod, either.
