I understand it's best if you put the actual buffer actually at the guitar, a la

I have build several of these and the difference is noticeable.

Yes, but a DECENT buffer is worth it. A BD-2 in bypass is a decent buffer, and with some cable lengths ( depending on cable ) it might improve the situation. But it does eat some tone by itself,... while buffering MY two cents: A B with and without
