building/ modifying a speaker cab for bass guitar.

I've had this old Laney 412speaker cab sitting around for a while. I doubt I'll ever need it for guitar, but I'm looking to put together a realy nice bass rig. I'm thinking of taking the speakers out of the Laney and replacing them with 12" Carvin woofers.

Another option would be to sell the guitar cab and build a 212 bass cab from scratch. That way it could be more tailored to my needs. (good portability and high output).

The Carvin speakers are 300 watt, 8 ohm each.

What sort of other parts would I need? (other than cabinet materials)

Thanks!

hey guys, after doing a quick google for speaker cabinet design, I found this nifty site http://colomar.com/Shavano/construction.html

It looks like some good ideas here. I'm starting to lean toward building my own cabinet, which may be cheaper if I can get some $$ selling the guitar cab I allready have.

You don't often see bass amps with 12" speakers. More often, you see combinations of 10" and 15" speakers, sometimes with high-frequency horns thrown in or ports for sub-bass. The best bass amps are bi-amped, with an active crossover to send the high frequencies to one speaker or cabinet, and the lows to another.

I've often wondered why bassists have such complex rigs to get the cleanest, purest sound reproduction at all frequencies, yet guitarists seem content with 12" and 10" speakers that just seem quite compromised in comparison.

You're right about the rarity of bass amps with 12" speakers. The reason I'm interested in 12's is because they have better bottom end than 10's, and are still a little bit punchier than 15's. I'd also like to keep it simple, with a basic head and a single cab. I hear plenty of guitarists jabbing at bass players for having enourmous rigs which just end up with line signals to the PA for shows. I guess my goal here is a compact rig with enough output to keep up with a realy loud drummer. Also, I'd like to do some building.
