Building my own instrument cable? - Made my own

After looking around locally, all I could find was a cheap 18 guage speaker cable, and a 20 ft. Monster cable. So I thought I would build my own. Got some Gold Plated plugs from Radio Shack and some 12 guage wire from the stereo store. Soldered it together and wrapped some electrical tape on the plug/wire junction. This set up should be good to go, right??

I have had problems with the rat shack phone jacks....

switchcraft 1/4 phone plugs, some good cable soldered and then shrink rapped....its worked for me and has lasted all my abuse..chips
