Can anybody help with drum machines/drum programming?

Hi guys

A bit of a long winded question coming up...sorry.

I have a Boss Dr-3 drum machine and the pre-sets on there aren't really any good in my opinion. What I want to do is be able to program my own drum stuff, preferably on a computer. I've tried doing it on the actual drum machine but it's really complicated and fiddly. I've just finished my music tech course at college and we used Cubase to imput the date on the computer, and it has a really good drum-map (although the drum sounds aren't very authentic). I was wondering if theres anyway I can get a more realistic sounding drum sound(like the Boss Dr-3 gives) with the easy mapping of cubase? I've got a feeling somebodys going to mention midi which I'm not very familiar with.

I hope this makes sense because its really fustrating...I'm trying to write my own stuff and the drumming is really the only thing stopping me recording any of it.

You could use a software sampler within cubase, using real drum samples.

I'm not sure what the standard sampler is for cubase, but some good drum samples are drumkit from hell (normal if you're looking for a cheap but good set, or superior if you have the space/power/money) www.toontrack.com.

That way, authentic sounds + good programming.

Native Instruments Battery, its about £79 and is basically an empty drum machine with slots for either their provided or your collated samples.

Then buy a loop cd that comes with the drumkits used as seperate instruments too.

Then you've got loops for speed, and identical-sounding kits which you can mix in when you need to put in a MIDI loop or extra fills, crashes, cymbals, etc.
