CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME BUY AN AMP?

hi I want to buy an amp. I have 1000 to spend. Maybe something used. I play Rock like Sum 41, Billy Talent.. Hard Rock, Metal like Killswitch Engage, Atreyu, etc. and I like a little bit of metalcore like As Blood Runs Black. (like their sound)I want to find an amp that is versatile. Could be tube, hybrid, solid state... just no cheap amps.. like really bad ones.. I have a Ibanez Prestige RGA 121 NWF all stock.

I really like the band Story Of the Year's sound.

i was thinking to get some amps:

Marshall DSL 50 or DSL 100 heads with a Marshall 1936 212 cab
Marshall TSL 60 or TSL 100 heads with Marshall 1936 212 cab.
Kustom 72 Coupe all tube combo
Marshall AVT150H (not newer x version) with a 1960 A cab
Marshall TSL 122 all tube combo (212)
Marshall TSL 601 or 602
Marshall MG100DFX head or combo? i dunno any more
Peavey XXX head with Marshall 1936 cab?
Peavey JSX 212 combo??

Can some one please help me find a versatile amp from good cleans to Rock to Hard rock to Metal to Metalcore? I was thinking maybe a Mesa Nomad or somthing. I just dont know. I wanted to buy a Kustom 72 Coupe but maybe a Marshall would be better? Thanks guys

i would probably choose the jsx combo or xxx head over any of the other choices.. what is the kuston 72 coupe like.. the only kustom i have played was one of those wierd looking combos, it was blue i think.

You've listed a pretty wide range of amps in terms of quality/ price.

THE 2 questions you need to ask yourself:

What type of sound are you trying to get? What type of budget do you have?

Then, I'd narrow it down to a couple/ three choices and pick a winner!

I just picked up a 15 year old Mesa Mark IV head for 1300 bucks, and it is by far the best amp I have ever owned. It is incredibly versatile. From gorgeous clean tones to nasty metal. I like it way better than my Mesa dual rectifier. Look on craigslist, there are always people out there trying to get rid of good stuff cheap.

I second the JSX Combo. It's versatile enough that it'll cover most tones you're looking for.

Re: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME BUY AN AMP?

Yea. I got 1000 to spend. Im going to buy a used amp since its cheaper and practaclly the same thing. I also dont play in a band and don't gig. But I dont want like a Line 6. Those are fake sounding. Oh...For anyone who want to hear the Kustom 72 Coupe, go on you tube and type in FPE TV and on the second vid it says As Blood Runs Black shred it up...They're using the Kustom in that vid. Also, there is one more Kustom 36 Coupe which is the same as the 72 except smaller and less powerful. go on you tube and type in second attempt at learning this tune. there will be only one vid. But that member has alot so just click on jis profile at the top middle-right of the screen.

Now for the amps.

I like Story of the Year's distortion, As Blood Runs Black's distortion
I want a good clean, punky (Sum 41 ish) distortion
something that will fit my budget. But I dont really want like 20 year old amps like an Old Boogie or somthing.

Maybe Mesa Rect-O-Verb combo? JSX? combo? XXX? head with cab?

Re: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME BUY AN AMP?

I found a used amp. What do you guys think?? Mesa Boogie 50 Caliber + 4x12 gonna be like 550 with shipping. Is it good?? (412 Mesa Cab has 4 Celestion Vintage 30's) Looks old maybe like 6-7 years old. I dont know. But the cab is different looking than from a standard 412 Recto cab. The grille is metal and it says MESA BOOGIE in white letters its the older type.

or maybe should I get the Kustom 72 Coupe for 470 with shipping?

Re: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME BUY AN AMP?

I haven't tried the Caliber but I can shed some info on the cab. The older Mesa 4x12 cab are matched for the Mark III and Coliseum series. They are half-back cabinet designs where the bottom of the cab is usually covered and the top half is open but can be closed. These are smaller than the Recto cabs but come in a variety of speaker combinations. Some have 4 90W Mesa Black Shadow Speakers, or 4 200W Mesa/EV speakers or a combination. Depending on the speakers, the cab itself can range from $300 - $500 which is a good deal considering the speakers alone are worth more than that.
I have a Boogie catalog from '84 that has a spread describing the Caliber series. I can scan that in if ya need info.

Re: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME BUY AN AMP?

If possible, take your favourite guitar with you to all the local guitar shops, and try as many amps as you can.

Let your ears make the choice for you, and pick the one that sounds best

If you want to nail a few different tones, just buy a couple of different distortion pedals and assorted effects or go the whole hog and get a multi effects floorboard like a Zoom or a Boss.

Rock on!

Dude, if you DON'T get the Mesa and 4x12, let me know, that is a SICK deal.
The .50 cal sells around here for about $6-650 alone!
