Carvin Legacy 50W/100W Mode

I got a question about the Carvin VL100 Legacy Head. If i use the Amplifier in 2 Tube 50W Mode, can i take out the two unused tubes or must they stay in place nevertheless? I ask, because i want to replace the tubes and i don't need the 100W mode, so i could safe some money and only buy 2 instead of 4 new tubes.
