Hey guys,
not like anybody really needs to know this but I feel like it just needs re-enforcing.
everyone needs to go over their music equipment weather they buy it new or used.
I just bought a new amp from Guitar Center not too long ago (
http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f30/ne...day-83857.html) and while going through the manual.pdf file I noticed it says all the Bias information.
I already had a little multimeter so I figured "why not!?" and decided to just check it out myself. Did everything the instructions said (ie move all knobs to zero and make sure all the wattage settings are on full and the amp turned fully on {ie no stand by}).
The manual says it should be set between 115mV and 130mV with the optimum setting being 120mV. I checked the Bias reading a million times just to be sure and it came from either the factory or Guitar Center WAY too hot. A blistering 141mV!
heh, okay so it probably wouldn't have hurt anything in my amp itself being only slightly hotter than average. But at the very least I saved a good portion of the tubes life span, considering a full set of tubes can range anywhere from $50-$100 I'd say it's time well spent to simply check these things out.
P.S. I'm still working on sound clips! my Pod's mic/aux inputs aren't exactly the most desirable sound in the world (it sounds like donkey turd!) so I'm trying to buy something to record with.
