checking cabinet impedance
The quickest way is to take the back of and look. Multimeters will give you the impedance, but as this is dependant on frequency (the coils in the speakers are basically huge inductors, and will therefore provide you with a reactance) To do this properly I suspect you'd have to plot the frequency response graph and all that, or measure with a reference frequency. I tried to find one page on a quick net search that could tell me what the standard measurement procedure was, but to no avail...
Measuring the cab with a multimeter set to resistance will just give you the resistive component of the coils, which is not really much use if you want to determine the impedance that your amp is going to see once you apply a signal to it. Typically (allegedly) an 8ohm rated speaker will have a 4ohm resistive component...
To be honest it's probably a lot easier to open it up and check the wiring, at least that way you can also have a look to make sure everything is OK as well... Pain in the arse, but you'll only have to do it once...
