Compressor for sustain

Right. I've been trying to find a decent compressor, for up to £50, in my quest for sustain. I want something quite transparent. The MXR 102 and 132 look quite tasty. Anyone got any views/suggestions?

Re: Compressor for sustain

What are your settings for the 2 knob btw?

To talk on topic, I haven't seen much sustain added using any compressor on my boss gt-pro or on my keeley 2 knob. The keeley ts9flexi adds a lot of sustain though.

Re: Compressor for sustain

Looks like a good piece of kit. I'm not looking for a drive pedal though, I'm happyenough with my tone as it is. All I'm looking for is a transparent sustain increase.

Re: Compressor for sustain

I use a compressor as well. Always on clean. but the JSX doesn't like or need a compressor on the dirty channels. Plenty of sustain from the amp itself. Boss compressor. It's not the best, but it works and I like it. Smooths out and thickens up the clean channel.

Re: Compressor for sustain

I've found a winner. A little more than I was looking to spend originally, but it looks worth it. Barber Electronics Tone Press for $150. I'll tell yous how it goes once it's arrived

I use the Barber, and it's great. You'll love yours. The parallel feature is great if you want to keep your original tone.

Re: Compressor for sustain

My christmas present arrived today; Barber Electronices Tone Press!!!!!

It's great! No hum, no noise. Nice to use for a little clean boost if needs be. Very transparent and doesn't colour attack, but can be used to give that classic compressor pop if needs be. Sustain for days!!!! And even better, it seems to have given new life to my guitars' tone as harmonics are so much more clear and defined and really ring out/scream (in context).

All in all, a good buy.

Re: Compressor for sustain

Congrats on the purchase! I will have to look that one up. As far as pedal compressors are concerned, the Keeley 4-knob pedal is supposed to be the quietest compressor pedal out there.

Re: Compressor for sustain

i've got the barber tonepress too and it does indeed kick ass. it makes just about any tube amp i play through sound better, but like darin said, i use it on the clean channel and apply distortion pedals over it. actually, i use it this way with my laney gh50L, but with the vintage modern, it sounds just as good on the dirty channel with the gain at a very low level.

Re: Compressor for sustain

Yeah I just use it in front of my clean and dirty channels for that extra little bit of juice. I works wonders.
