crazy tone needed

guys i need to get somewhat a heavy distorted tone and a cool lead tone

Petrucci's tone is most likely it.. or maybe paul gilbert's lead tone.. they're both cool..

i have a Fender 212R amp.. and an RG550 with tonezone and HFH on it. the question is.. any pedal to boost my opportunity reaching that tone?

currently i have

Guitar>TU2>DD3>MetalMuff>BF-2>CE5>DS1>GE7

it didnt reach there..

PS: how to get an easy pinch harmonic? i can nail it but there are times when the tone is too "dry" to do one. maybe my action is pretty low and now i set it high, same result

thanks

Re: crazy tone needed

I tried the ubermetal, it won't get you there imo, sorry mi2tom :P

A turned up tube amp, Mesa/Boogie, Marshall most likley is best, and a TS9 or DS-1. Fender isn't really a good start haha.

Gilbert's tone is very twangy, mostly from his fingers (When you hear him play unplugged, it sounds the exact same as plugged in, kinda freaky actually) and not that much gain, whereas Petrucci has those Boogie's pushing some gain!

Re: crazy tone needed

pinch tone..?? im guessing its ur amp

some amps are not responsive enoiugh and if the frequency doesnt have enough gain to it, the mp will drop it while other notes ring on....

you arent really at all using over the top pickups either, neither to tone zone or humbucker from hell will give u a sweet pinch harmonic

what u need to look for are pickups wich in design.....already have a large bassy punch, that has a conected clean cripst compressed midrange to high range frequency

when you compress the mid rang and high range, what ends up hapening is you bring the individual, and collective gain(these are micro readings btw) you increase the signal dynamics and responce

it sound completely different and goes through ur metal muff differently too!

you should be looking into

bridge

breed, evo, x2n
or with duncan
a duncan distortion

and neck
evo/1/2, breed, air, fred
or a duncan p/u
jb, jazz, (d distorion for over the top tapping)

id also recoment not using pedals, amybe get a vax tonelab, and old one ro a new one

they are both mega superior now adays

and id recoment going into a good power amp no preamp

ur already making the tone with ur pedals.....so just get a tube poweramp loaded with tubes that compliment u(for sweals and bad ass tone id say 6550, but u gotta payu lots for a good 6550 or it will sound mega muddy and lame)

or for just metal, go with a 6l6 design

or for blues or mellower playing go with a el34/84 tpe

Pinch harmonics aren't that hard to do, it just takes practice. As far as the pickups are concerned, you should be on the money for an "Images and Words" type of sound. If you're looking for his newer sound, I believe he's using a Steve Special and an Air Norton. I tell you though, I can get screaming harmonics out of my Fred without any problems.

It's really irritating when people can not only spell, but seem to try and make it as difficult to read as possible. Spellcheck my friend is only part of your problem.
ie, (for sweals and bad ass tone id say 6550, but u gotta payu lots for a good 6550 or it will sound mega muddy and lame).

Is the above statement A:Praising the 6550? B:giving negative feedback for the 6550? or C: Who the hell knows? I'm sorry, but bad ass tone yet muddy and lame is somewhat... confusing. And what is a sweal?

For what it's worth, I managed to get great pinch harmonics from a tone zone pickup.

Re: crazy tone needed

You should be able to get pinch harmonics out of an acoustic, I'm not bashing, but it could be your technique. A pickup with nice midrange gain will help bring out your harmonics as will a little bit of gain, but technique has a lot to do with it.

Re: crazy tone needed

btw, i'd go with the ubermetal, that'll get you almost any tone you need for rock/metal. since i love line6, i'd recommend the pod as a front end for your amp, too.
