Dead Head

At the end of our practice session last week my head died off over about 2 or 3 minutes and I could hear a faint high pitched noise through the cab (I think maybe the transformer?). The head still worked, it just sounded bad and had no distortion tone left at all and not nearly the power it normally does. I am assuming I need to replace some tubes however as this is my first tube head I do not know where to start. Thus my question, How do I know if I need to replace preamp tubes or the power tubes? I could take it in but I would really like to learn this stuff for myself. The head is a v3 and the tubes are groove. Any assistance or resource would be greatly helpful. Thanks, Anth

Re: Dead Head

sounds like one of the preamp tubes are dying out... if have any spare tubes, try replacing 'em one at a time rather than spending the money to replace all of 'em; unless you plan changing the grooves to something else...
