Decisions - Power Amp Comparison - One model for different s
OK *- here's one.
Let's say you wanted to play a variety of styles from one end of the spectrum to the other - like maybe heavy Dream Theater type stuff *to the super clean
Eric Johnson
type stuff.
And let's say you knew you wanted a
tube amp
and maybe you were looking at the Carvin 100 or the Boogie 50/50 - which one would it be???

OK - streamlined version:
of the two amps (i.e., boogie 50/50 or carvin 100), which would you use knowing that you're going for a variety of sounds?
Not just using it for Godsmack thunder type sounds

Since the biggest difference you will notice will be in the clean sound, I will advise you on that. *The 6L6's you'll get in the Boogie (not sure about the Carvin) will give you a clean sound that can be CRANKED and will not break up like an EL34 in a Marshall. *So, assuming you'll be playing the amp at reasonable volumes, take that info and use it at your descretion.
Anyone with info on the Carvin, please pipe in and feel free to knock me.

OK - feedback is good;
Useful info on the boogie - thx
I'm not familiar with vht - did some research though & was wondering if anyone could clue me in on what the "damping" & "voicing" adjustment actually do.
While I am familiar with "presence" controls - I'm not sure I'd know how to put it's effect into words, but seems to adjust/boost/cut the frequency bandwidth of signal.

The other thing to consider is price. *$700 for a 50/50 if you can find one... *I'm actually a bit dissapointed in Mesa's features. *For >200$ less you can get a
Peavey Classic
50/50 which has a mono feature where you don't have to worry about accidently blowing up your amp if you are going to use a single cab, like a 2x12 rectifier cab that doesn't come wired for stereo (thanks again Mesa).

I just got a mesa 50/50 for $350, I'd say most of them used go around $400-500.
Presence, I believe, gives you a boost in the upper mid frequency range, to help your guitar cut through the mix.

oh the vht ---
it has class switching -- a/b or a
volume -- duh
presence -- high frequency filter (same as any other amp)
depth -- controls speaker excursion
level switch -- cuts to half power
voicing switch -- standard is very warm and smooth almost bognerish, then with the switch on its very marshall but warmer and not as harsh
it runs on 4 el34s and is 50 watts per side

*i say the best
power amp
for the money is the peavey 50/50 it has precense and resonance controls that let u adjust your farther, its like a high and low boost. it is stereo and u can hook up 2, 4, 8, and 16 ohm cabs or cabs with different impendance on either side and its 100 watts, 50 per side. u can also run it on mono which the boogie doesn't let u do it has direct outs with level controls along with 1/4 an trs inputs. and new its like 450 i got mine used for 299. just thought it could be usefull.
