Well for Vai/Satriani the Boss DS-1 is what they use in their rigs. However Petrucci uses Mesa Boogie amps so his sound is quite different. *A Mesa V-Twin pedal would be a great pedal for that.

I heard a demo of a Danelectro Fab tone once that was total Satch's Surfin tone

As the man says a BOSS DS-1 for Vai and satch through a tube amp

JP on the other hand his tone is all Mesa. No pedal will give you that sound. Unless it's the V-twin and that's more a preamp type thing plus it's expensive.

The line6 didtortion modller might be your best bet but try Danelectro's Daddy'o and fabt tone also the DS-1

He11 try them all out and see what you like.

I know you're looking for the Vai/JS/JPM sound, but I would like to plug the Marshall Guv'Nor. *It is the only distortion pedal I have ever liked - it doesn't sound fake, especially on a clean tube channel.

You might want to check out the Fulltone Distortion Pro.I don't know if it will give you the Vai/JS/JPM sound but from the description on the page,I think you can get some amazing tones from the pedal-Allan Holdsworth to Brian May to EJ!!

http://www.fulltone.com/DP1.asp

"Coming soon to a store near you!

Not a FUZZ! The greatest hi-gain sounds you can imagine, from Brian May to Boston, Holdsworth to EJ in a little metal box -- dripping with harmonics and feel -- unlimited shades of dirty, crunchy, Bluesey, and it even cleans up well as you turn the guitar's volume knob down. Leave the pedal *on and do everything from the guitar!

NOT A TUBE-DRIVEN PEDAL (and much more "tubey" sounding than any I've heard).

Volume, Distortion, Resonance, Voicing,
Hi-End and Saturation controls -- capable of turning the thinnest brightest amp you own into a 100 lb. violin.

Both Satch and Vai is using the DS-1 to "spice" up the dist. on the amps!

Get a good amp. *If you can play at any kind of volume there's no excuse for buying a pedal over an amp. *For example, on EBay the Fulltone drive pedals sell for just under 200$. *You could buy a Mesa Subway Rocket combo amp for $350 and get the real goods, 4 12ax7 + 2 EL84.

Even better, if you want a good soloing tone (which is sounds like you do) try out a THD Univalve head. *You can swap out the tubes and stick in any power tube type you want. *It comes with an EL34 which sounds good but IMO is a little too dark. *I ordered a couple 6L6's and 6550's to try out in the power section instead to tighten it up and make it brighter. *These sell for < $850 on the net, I got mine for $759 at a local store, a TOTAL bargain considering what you get. *It has a built in THD Hotplate so you can CRANK the amp, stick it on 3/4 volume and get power tube distortion without getting evicted.

yes, they use both at the same time, but they use conservative settings on the ds-1 to only tighten up the sound and add attack and sustain. *vais settings are:
tone @ 9 o'clock
level @ 11 o'clock
distortion @ 11 o'clock
try it, youll be surprised
