Do ears tire of Grunge*? - Solid State Distortion

Do ears tire of solid state distortion after awhile or is it just preference. The reason I ask is because today I plugged in my old DOD Grunge pedal and it did sound cool, for metal, but for say a Steve Vai sound or Satch sound it was way too harsh and mid-less. A year or two ago I would not have noticed it one bit but now I can tell that I really do not like that sound for the type of music I want to play. Has this happened to any others out there? I know some of you like solid state and that is great. I must admit I bet you can et the best clean sound out of a Roland JC-120 amp than any tube amp there is. I may be wrong though. Is it just preference or natural evolution? :mc:

i call it natural evolution.
it's happened (or it's gonna happen) to anyone here around...
what's the problem? try a different gear, or simply plug the babe directly thru the amp: this sounds weird, but many of us have found his tone this way.
try it and let us know.

Used to love it, then got a vtwin, then went completely valve. Solid state distortion just doesn't really do it for me anymore. Guitar into amp (pre+power) with a few effects (delay) thrown in for leadwork only.

Everyone wants tube amps these days. I want solid state. Not really because of the sound but because I like being against the trend Then again I love my (new) JC-120. I just have a little problem finding a good distortion pedal to go with it. Maybe I should see if I can find a DOD grunge myself...

My amp is solid state, and I love it, I don't dig tubes at all, I'd say it's just personal preference

I have liked both. *My personal preference is to run SS distortion and effects through a Tube head. *

This is the best work around I have since I can't afford the tube amp I want right now. *In the future, I'll switch over to an all tube setup with a 5150
