Old (MIJ) DS-1 pedals use another op-amp and better quality parts. The newer DS-1 (MIT) use cheapest crap BOSS could possibly find.

Your amp has a lot to do with your overall tone....but not all of it. It's a combination of amp, pickups/guitar, and the quality of your distortion pedal/effect.
I think it is clear that the stock ds-1 doesn't please too many ppl here. When i got my keeley ultra mod....and phat mod bd-2.....my guitar tone came to life and i was able to get an excellent tone. But i had the help with my Js guitars, and my fender twins with EL34's.......getting satch like tones was a lot easier. I like satch's tone.....so that was what i was after.
High quality amps, and guitars do help in getting the tone you want. If you can afford them......it's worth getting.
And i've said it before.....if you can get the keeley ultra mod, by all means get one. It blows the stock away

I get decent results from my stock MIT DS1, through a tube combo (clean).. I probably wouldnt use it for my main tone, but for a santana cover it works quite well (neck hum, loads of reverb), or for a Police-type solo sound (bridge split hum).... Of course its no MkII or JC120, but it does the job nicely.

I wouldn't say it is modded.....only had them biased when i switched to the 34's......the 6L6's were a bit too harsh for my personal tastes

I modded an MIT DS-1 myself, with uprated parts (LEDs which clip faster for different 'colours' of distortion) and play through a dodgy Valvestate AVT275.

Sounds pretty darn good IMHO, esp with a tiny bit of amp distortion, but mainly pedal distortion - a-la Mr Satriani.

Fiddle with the pedal's position in the effects chain. I've found that my chorus pedal's 'filter' works nicely with the distortion to bring the guitar forward in the mix. Good for soloing or lead riffs.

I can't believe no one has said this yet but the best thing to get right now would be a new bridge pickup.
I'd go with ToneZone or PAF Pro but you can ask around and try something different.
I think that the money spent on sending the DS1 over to the US getting the Keely mod and shipping it back would be far better spent on a new, better quality pick up.

Pretty good idea! Don't go for an evolution though if you think the DS-1 sounds weedy. The output is a often little too trebly for beginners to set properly, and you'll be disappointed. PAF Pro or ToneZone would be VERY nice, and much more useable.

The two different circuits used in the DS-1 explain differences in the sound of certain MIJ DS-1 models and the common MIT.
One thing we tried to make sure of is that everyone how had and liked the old MIJ DS-1 would like the sound of the SEM or the Ultra. We tried to make sure that sound was attainable. The only difference being that ours has a more natural bass response, both MIT and MIJ seem to be too rolled of for most people's taste.
I still enjoy the MIJ DS-1 from time to time...I think ours sounds a little more dimensional (livin' larger!) than the old one.
For guys playing more of a blues style we really recommend the BD-2. That is where the tone is much improved.
Here's our new toy....it's a precursor to the rack mount DS/SD circuits we'll have out soon.

Ahh, sweet! The man himself has arrived!

Love the new rack!

Will the other stuff get the same option? I would totally dig a rack TMB.
