Duran Duran type fuzz?

Hi all,
I was just wondering what fuzz would nail the guitar sound for songs like Rio and Girls on Film.
Thanks,
Matt

Not true, you need a good foundation. Along with that some primo eye liner, mascara, lipstick, and AquaNet Hairspray.

Mattycake, just joking around with you man. Come on man, DuranDuran? You had to have known if you asked that question you were asking for it.

I don't have an answer for you, but I just wanted to defend you on Duran Duran - I love them. Those guys were great musicians back in the day....."Rio" is an excellent album, period.

Though I don't have an answer for you I know who will. You should try him at least . Nile Rogers

Those first Duran Duran tracks were produced by the legendary Nile Rogers....find him on myspace. He sculpted their sound (mainly with Telecasters). I bet if you PMed him directly he would let you know (and I would love to know what he says). Some of Duran Duran's stuff has stood the test of time... they were a real band and with Nile Rogers made some classic recordings.

Nile's style is meticulous, he would have recorded everything in an extremely perfect way so I'll go back and listen to those tracks and chuck in my 2 pence as I think you'll probably pick up alot of info just by hearing the way the guitar are processed on the record.

Re: Duran Duran type fuzz?

The clean rhythm guitars in Girls on Film definitely have a Nile Rogers influence. As for those fuzz tones, it sounds a little brighter than a Fuzz Face. Though this pedal didn't exist yet at the time, try a Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Octave Fuzz (the older one that's the same size as an MXR Phase 90, not the new Octavia clone) and use the guitar's bridge pickup, which will minimize the octave effect and give you that cutting treble. The recording also sounds very close mic'ed, or perhaps even direct into the mixing desk.

For the record, I saw Duran Duran at V Festival earlier this year and they were (*&#*$ing amazing.

Re: Duran Duran type fuzz?

Rio and Girls on Film (1982) predate Nile Rodgers involvement with Duran Duran by about two years.

Nile Rodgers only started producing Duran Duran for the remix to "the Reflex" (1984), he also played some guitar for them, until Warren Cucurillo joined (from Frank Zappa's band!)

I distincly remember Joe Satriani commenting favourably on Cucurillo´s work for Duran Duran.

However, the early guitar work is all Andy Taylor, whose more rocky sound can also be heard on the Power Station (/w Robert Palmer)

My bad, it was the late Colin Thurston who was behind the desk.

Re: Duran Duran type fuzz?

i think in the rio days andy taylor used a late 70s maybe early 80 marshall jmp 100 watt head ...so it has gain but not loads ,so when your playing funky chords they still overdrive but not saturated ..... and maybe a overdrive pedal for the sustained lead parts ..... if you were to use a pedal maybe something like the vox sachurator but backing of on the gain and also slightly on the guitars volume pot , then for the lead hit more and turn the volume up to max . and for totaly clean wich he didnt use a great deal surprisingly switch the pedal off , but have all your volumes balenced between pedal and amp ...... or if you have a didtorded amp back down the gain slightly and use volume pot on guitar ..... andy taylor used to use a telecaster in the early days and then a yamaha sg in the rio days .....when i last seen andy taylor he was using a peavey xxx ........ and also back to a tele .. hope this helps

Re: Duran Duran type fuzz?

I always thought that he used a Telecaster, and that probably contributes a lot to the sound.

Duran Duran always had some interesting bass lines, as well.
