Eat em and Smile !

hey dudes

this should be an easy one for all you ibanez vai heads out there.

I was just wondering could anyone tell me what setup vai is using on the eat em n smile DLR album - guitar , pickups, amp, distortion pedal etc?

Oh and is it the same setup for Skyscraper album?

I must expand my musical trivia knowledge !

Re: Eat em and Smile !

I loved his guitar tone on both of these albums if I could get the Yankee Rose tone I would be set for life.

Did he also use a guitar equipped with PAF Pros on the album?

Re: Eat em and Smile !

Isn't the current Vai-auction VDY labelled as "Skyscraper"? Might just hint at it's use...
The LNG features in the "Stand Up" video.

Eat'm and smile, however is pre-Jem. So it should be Green Meanie or the Crossroads red Jackson (Charvel?).

Amp wise: there are Carvins in Steve's backline for the Crossroads' guitar duel.
Note, both Eat'm and the movie are 1986. Some of the duel tone is very much like Ladies' Night in Buffalo, but dryer.

As far as I know, Slip of the Tongue (1989) is Universe + JCM900 + Ibanez MT-10 (Mostortion) similar to the giant giveaway that GuitarPlayer had back in 1991.

http://www.jemsite.com/etc/dl/zip/z_ad_et5.zip

Steve's tone changed a lot in those three to four years:

Eat'em + crossroads
vs.
SoTT + PaW

Re: Eat em and Smile !

From vai.com's forums:

big trouble set up :

green meanie charvel

marshall 100 watt head directly into a 4x12 cabinet with 50 watt celestions

This could be opinion, though -but the Guitar Extravaganza book is meant to detial the sound and set-up.

Re: Eat em and Smile !

The text next to the Green meanie picture on vai.com:

The "Green Meanie" is actually a Charvel Strat-style guitar loaned to Steve by Grover Jackson (of Jackson Guitars) when Steve joined Alcatrazz. Originally a sunburst finish, Steve stripped it and painted it day-glo green, and it has eventually become covered in various stickers, etc.

This guitar was used on "Disturbing The Peace" and for virtually everything on "Eat 'Em & Smile". It has since been retired and is safely locked away.

Re: Eat em and Smile !

Yankee Rose: Green Meanie Charvel, into 100W Marshall Head into a 4x12 with 30W Celestion speakers.

Shy Boy; same but 50W Celestions

Ladies Nite In Buffalo, Pink Jackson guitar, 100W Marshall head/30W Celestions

Big Trouble.....as Batchimp says

Elephant Gun and Big Trouble...as Yankee Rose

Going Crazy: Green Meanie, Carvin X110B Amp.

That's the basics alledgedly

Obviously effects and stuff vary from song to song

Re: Eat em and Smile !

I have the Vai songbook, and if memory serves me (which it doesn't, always!), Andy's correct. I know the Green Meanie was used on the tracks, as well as Marshalls. I may have to pull that book out and double-check....
