effect chain assortment

ok can anyone help me setup my pedal board. I have a boss ds-1 (overdrive), mt-2 (distortion), bf-2 (flange), ac-2 (acoustic simulator), and a original crybaby (wah). I assume that the wah goes last...anyway thanks .

Re: effect chain assortment

Wah>OD>DIST>AC?>FL

Flange should go after the amps preamp.

Callen, this is a pretty good read that will give you some insight as to why you should chain things in a certain order.

Re: effect chain assortment

Wahs usually come first. Of course, there are no rules, but I'd set it up this way:

wah > distortion pedals > acoustic simulator > flanger

To be honest, I don't agree with that article above that much. Most players I've seen (Satriani, Vai, Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, Eric Johnson, etc...) all have their wahs first in the chain (except maybe a tuner or compressor). This guide explains it in the way that most people set up their pedal boards:

http://users.chariot.net.au/~gmarts/fx-order.htm

Satch's board, for example:

Vinnie Moore's (obviously looking at the pedal board from the behind, so the input is on the far left side):

Re: effect chain assortment

I agree with Waylay on the Wah. That Article I linked spends a lot of time talking about how Hendrix was the exception to the rule. I can't run my wah after my distortion. I get some real weird clipping and it sounds like crap. The article does, however, start to give you some ideas as to why things are placed in certain order. Waylay's article is pretty solid as well, but I disagree with the Phaser location in that article. I didn't like my phaser before the distortion. In the end, it's going to come down to a certain amount of trial and error as they relate to personal taste.

But Waylay's order is the same that I would start with as well.

Re: effect chain assortment

so after all of this, I realized i'd only placed the phaser after the wah, and never moved it around. I found out I really like the subtle effect it has before the distortion. Not enough to move it, as I really like the swoooooshy effect of my phase 90 at the end of my chain, but enough to get GAS for a second phase 90 to place before the dist.

Anyone else using two phasers?

No 2 phasers but I also place my phase-90 before the distortion. As you said I prefer the subtle effect it has before it gets distorted.

Re: effect chain assortment

My setup is like this at the moment:

Wah>MicroPOG>KeeleyDS1>Satchurator>DD7>****-Chorus>MXRPhase90>MXRmicroamp>AMP

Just wondering if I should move the POG somewhere else in the chain. It doesn't seem to cope well with the wah. Any suggestions?

would you move anything else?

Thanks for any advice.

I use two phasers, but I use one before delay and one after. I really like the sound of both, so that's why I have two.

I think you've got the general idea. Just experiment with ones you are curious about. Remember that the pedals on the RIGHT are actually first. I though for nearly 3 years that the pedals on the left where first, so I had all of my pedals wired backwards.
