Effects loop question

When talking about effects loops, some are +4dB and some are 10dB. I know that the +4dB effects loops are meant for pedals and the 10dB are used with rack effects typically speaking, but can you use a rack effect in a tube-buffered +4dB effects loop successfully?
Thx
Kev

Re: Effects loop question

I'll give this a shot. I think instrument level which is what you use with most stompboxes is -10dB. Line level which rack gear uses is +4dB. Instrument level is less hot than line level. Some rack effects like a G-major have a setting for pro or consumer which selects the input level. Rack effects are generally more accomadating to varying input levels because they ahve the ability to adjust input/output level. there are some stompboxes that have the ability to select line/instrument level also like Boss dd-20/CE-20
