Re: EQ pedals... Do they really make a big difference?

I use one because the highs on my Peavey Valveking can be quite harsh. It's some cheapy unit my cousin gave me and it does the trick, but I'll eventually get the MXR 10-band for more fine tweaking.

This is how I used to use my Boss GE7 ...in the loop of a Marshall JCM900 or 2000. I used it with a delay pedal, and would stomp on both for my leads (volume boost and some delay) Worked great, but now I just use a TC gmajor 2 in the loop of my SLO..........as Soldano loops do not mix with stomp boxes.

Re: EQ pedals... Do they really make a big difference?

Several others touched on this but I'll reiterate... I think EQ pedals are particularly powerful for use as a solo boost/cut through. I usually play live through my first gen 5150 rig, and because I like a really thick, heavy, chunky rhythm sound I have the native EQ set up to deliver that. Tht also makes my cleans nice and warm which I like (5150 uses 1 EQ shared by both channels). However, when it comes to soloing, such an EQ means your solos are totally lost in the mix. I use an EQ to really boost the mids and add just a few extra dB for solos and it makes a huge difference.

EDIT: I realized I forgot to specify what EQ I'm using. I use a Boss Gt10 through the FX loop. I only use it for FX loop stuff - reverb, chorus, delay and EQ. I have a "solo boost" EQ I've programmed and just toggle it on and off.

Good topic, something I've wondered about too. Are eq pedals useful for recording purposes too, or is it better to record the signal 'as is' and then eq during the mixing stage? I wonder because I thought it'd be better to record the guitars in a non-destructive way so you can have full control of what to do with the sound in the mix.

I used a 6 band EQ on my old amp setup.. then I bought a Carvin V3 and I took it off my pedal board. I had a pre-amp pedal too and I also took that off.
