EQs

I am going to buy an EQ rackmount soon, I was wondering what you guys (an gals) around here use?

At the moment I am leaning towards a graphic dual channel eq at the moment so I can send one eq before the amp and one in the loop.

But I also like the look of the Rocktron Juice Extractor, which for those who don't know. Is a highly "inteligent" Parametric eq which is used by Allan Holdsworth.

So my Questions are this:
Do you use an EQ? If so what type (model and make)?
Do you use a Parametric?

Thanks

Paras will be more flexible for guitar. On a graphic you can't adjust Q (bandwidth) and many of the sliders will be outside the guitar's tonal range, and therefor useless. Still, a cheap 1/3 octave job CAN be useful, and likely way cheaper than "a pair 'o paras". ;-)

I have a pair of old Alesis Micro EQ's (paras). But I don't often use them on guitar; I get what I need from my amp modeler.

There are quite a few guitarists who will use a para EQ to notch out harsh frequencies in their amps. Id go for the Para EQ myself

I vote parametric, as well. Also, the juice Extractor is not used by Holdsworth. He built his own device called the Harness that does what he wants it to better than the Rocktron unit. Problem is, they're very rare and people who have them aren't usually inclined to sell them.

Has anyone here had any experiences with the Alesis PEQ 450? It is a great price and was wondering if it was good or not?

I have a Juice Extractor and it's pretty cool. I like the fact that I have seperate outputs, to feed whatever. Also the EQ shapes are remote switchable so you can go to flat, or either of the two shapes. The parametric is clean, and useful. Its really capable of warping the sound because you can adjust the "Q". To me that's a must for a parametric EQ. Plus it's got the hush in there, whatever you think of that. I leave it off, but on a high gain Boogie it can be useful, even if you have other gates, because you can set it really lightly just to help trim out a little bit of noise so the gates don't mis-trigger. But not so much that it wrecks the sound.

As with everything, if you get the latest trendy "competitively priced" name brand units they can get pretty noisy. And sometimes the operating noise is acceptable, but the EQ boosts and output (above unity gain) get really noisy. So you can't use it to it's fullest.

I have an A.R.T. Dual Tube EQ (single space, two channel rack unit) which are now out of production. But it is a nice tube Para EQ that will warm up your guitar tone a bit and the EQ on it is great. I use it when i mix and master studio tracks. Great for anything though............

I'm running the Rane MPE-14 midi programmable eq.
Overkill for guitar, but I got it in "my more blinking lights are better" phase.

dual channel, 14 band, 128 presets, all time adjusted to negate pops from abrupt curve shifts.
