Equipement is a drug

What do you think about it?

I think people are buying the best equipement as they can.For example my friend started guitar 5 month ago. Then he started with a **** pack with a cheap guitar and a cheap amp.5 month later he got a gibson sg USA,a 100 watt transitor marshall one and the lastest pod.And now he want to buy a
mesa boogie rectifier.

I think some people take more time to buy equipement than to play lolll!

They hope that their lack of current ability lies within their gear. Better gear= better ability.

Known fact.

GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Medically documented syndrome, manifests in seemingly irresistable urge to purchase musical equipment. No known cure. Prognosis : grim.

Hi, my name is Scott, and I'm a GASaholic.

I've been suffering from a mild case of GAS all week. Yesterday, I acquired an Ibanez AD-9 analog delay and a MXR EVH phase 90. Both were skimmed off of that vile, disgusting, festering heap of an auction site that's been eating a hole in my kid's inheritance for the past 6 years.

Help us Obi-Wan-Kenobi. You're our only hope.

Yeah, I almost feel victim to that very syndrome. Good thing I associated with other guitarists who constantly reminded me of how much I sucked and how big a waste of money it would be. So now here I am...been playing for almost 2 years and I'm JUST NOW getting new guitar equipment. Which reminds me...new Ibanez arrives tomorrow...

Re: Equipement is a drug

I think I sometimes spend time buying and selling gear to avoid the fact that I'm not a very good guitarist. If spent as much time playing as I did worrying about gear, buying gear and selling it then I'd be a kick a$$ guitarist by now!

The other side of it is that when I was in my teens and starting out playing guitar I could never afford anything good. I always used drool over magazine ads and the Ibanez catalogue. Now I'm in a position where I can afford some of the things I've always wanted.

I confess: I spend much more time reading about gear online and in magazines than actually playing. The result is I know a LOT about gear, and still suck at playing!

Anyway, I can research online at my office, but it would be a little harder to bring my guitar here!

Re: Equipement is a drug

During the first 15 years playing the guitar I used the same guitar and amp which costed me something like $250 together and I was playing like 4 hours every day.

Kids have access to too much money and this is not good because don't learn the value of what they buy.

I am exactly the same.
But I like being that way. For me, being a wizard on the guitar isnt what I am doing it for. I am doing it for fun, because I enjoy it. I dont really care whether I am good or not to be honest - as long as I am having fun who cares.

Equipment IS a drug! There are those who think good equipment will make them play better, and then there are those who are on a neverending quest for the best tone ever!

Either way it costs a lot of $$$$

Re: Equipement is a drug

Recording equipment is much worse for GAS. So many more possiblities! I have very little guitar related GAS, my recording equip gas is far worse but i tend to keep it under control.

Re: Equipement is a drug

Started playing when I was 13. Due to the fact that I lived with stingy Asian parents I was not given a chance to have GAS. Now that I'm in college I can just starve myself for a prolong period of time to save up for a guitar. :P

I was stuck with a crappy MIK beginner no name brand guitar for almost 7 years until I was allowed to purchase newer guitars. But...it was definately worth the wait...I have a JEM7VWH and a RG550 now. I have to say, equipment did make a huge impact on my playing.

Re: Equipement is a drug

well, put it that way, equipment plays a huge part in how we sound. I mean you gotta have good chops to be able to play great, but you also need the right gear as well. I mean you don't have to own the greatest guitar and amp, but you gotta own the combination that produces decent tone.

I've been playing for 5 years now, I started off with a Squier Stratocaster then moved onto an Epiphone G-400 and then finally an Ibanez Jem7vwh. Most of the stuff that I play now, can't be played on my old guitars. So I think having the right equipment is important as well.

I say 70% of a guitar players sound comes from their fingers and 30% comes from their gear.
