Extremely Annoyed
I think today I probably committed the worst mistake of my life,, to cut it short, am a beginner started guitar about 6 months back with no idea of amps & guitars, got myself some good advice got two nice guitars, ESP SV STD & Jem 7V ,, now the worst part,, was in damn need of an amp,, my mistake didn't consult the jem community as i should have, anyway some guy
gave me an advice that Marshall MG100 DFX is a great AMP without getting any advice went to one of the stores had my Yamaha PRS 1100 keyboard gave it away in exchange for this just got home and started reading reviews (how stupid isn't it) and the reviews made me so upset,, can't believe wat i did,, anyway they were offering me an other amp too marshall forgot the model though,, but seriously i need some advice here not feeling good after reading all those reviews :P

Re: Extremely Annoyed
I didn't really understand what you said, but I think I got the following gist of it.
You have a Jem 7V and some sort of ESP - they are both good guitars you are very lucky!!! I had an acoustic for a catalogue when I was playing for that long.
You also have a MG100 DFX that your not too happy with becuase you read some bad reviews on it. To me this is a little silly becuase you haven't stated that you dont like the sound of the amp. This is what matters.
However, I have to point out that if you have been playing 6 months you shouldn't be too concerned about the gear you use. Worry about playing the guitar getting comftorable with chord changes and playing scales and having fun.
I dont care if people think my guitar or amp or whatever suck, or blow, the fact is they do what I want them to.
I'm certian you can get a good sound from the MG100 DFX. I played a gig at University a while ago and used one and it was fine.

Re: Extremely Annoyed
Don't let someone else's negative review make you feel bad about a purchase. Who cares what someone you don't know and will probably never meet thought about an amp. People buy gear and expect that one piece of gear to cure all of their "tone" or playability issues.
Do what Big Job said and stick to practicing and learning how to play. The way you play your guitar is how real guitarists measure your skill, not by what flavor of the month amp or pedal you have.
Also, if the MG100DFX was such a huge POS, why would a company that has a reputation like Marshall bother putting their name on it? ;p
Congrats on the new aquisition and be happy with what you got. You have nicer guitars than alot of people on this board do hehe =)

Because if it has "Marshall" written on it, people will pay money for it. Marshall doesn't really have any sort of reputation anymore, at least not a decent one.

You are of course kidding here......
That's like saying "Fender doesn't really have any sort of reputation anymore....."
I don't play through Marshalls (switched to Mesa Boogies about ten years ago), but Marshall would still have to be the absolute iconic rock amp!
And to Aqeel - don't go too hard off reviews - particularly Harmony Central, which is mainly reviews submitted by illiterate schoolkids who haven't got the slightest clue what they are talking about (which is why half the reviews go along the line of "My indonesian
Squier Strat
blows any Custom Shop Fender out of the ring....) - take your Marshall back to the shop and a/b it with the AVT - they are both fine amps, maybe get one of the
music store
dudes to play through them both so you can stand back and listen to them both while someone else dials in clean and crunchy sounds - THEN figure out which one will do the job you want it to do!
And, happy playing!

Wayne Static from Static X uses (or used to) one live and in the studio,
so it can't be all that bad

Jimmy Page
recorded the lead break for Stairway to Heaven using a tiny Supro amp - basically a "student model" which you bought from Sears & Roebucks - and, um, I think he did okay.......
Come to it,
Eric Clapton
recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard using only only a Pignose battery powered practice amp! (mind you, I think his tone on that album was atrocious!)

Re: Extremely Annoyed
The AVT will sound better than the MG, but the AVT still won't sound great.
To be honest, as you're still such a beginnner, either will be fine for a long long time, but it makes sense to get the best you can. Get the AVT and go PRACTISE!

Re: Extremely Annoyed
I'd bring the amps back and compare the two of them side to side. This way YOU can tell which one is better for your needs.
However, it comes back to playing time, I'd be very superised if you could dial in the exact tone that your thinking of. Sometimes you just have to 'grin and bare it' when it comes to tones - or inleast I used to. Its when I learned how to play when I could use ANY amp and play through it.
For instance, for band practice I use a 15w 'Rhino' amp. I have never heard anyone mention these amps. The amp has a big rip in the speaker cone and 3 of the knobs on the frount are missing and stuck in one place. This amp lives in the boot of my car and Iwhen I get it out just tweak it a little and away I go....its not ideal but I make it work.
Go with what's best for you - it sounds cryptic I know but its the truth!

You sound like an idiot.
Marshall has the richest history in all ampdom.
More pro players use Marshall than any other amp.
Marshall sells better than all other amps combined at Musician's Friend.
Please do your homework before making stupid statements or you will quickly lose all credibility on this site.

Re: Extremely Annoyed
I think what he is trying to say, is that people will buy anything if it says Marshall on it, because they expect it to be a good amp (and they want to have a MARSHALL), and because of this, lately Marshall had been putting out sub par amps (MG, AVT, etc). Because they were lowering themselves to this, players were looking at them in a new way, a view that Marshall is just in it for the money, and not for the tone anymore. I guess the new vintage moderns are OK, but if you want true Marshall tone, you're almost definitely buying used; whereas you could pick up another amp in the same price range as said new Marshall, and get a far better amp which's only lacking feature is a Marshall logo across the grill.
That's just my view, also how I see them these days...
Also, I'm no tone god, but I know what I like, and the MG didn't cut it for me. I would go back to the store and exchange it for maybe a 20-30 watt
tube amp
or something in that range...
Don't be ashamed to post anything humiliating on these boards either, the only stupid thing to say is nothing at all! But also, don't purely base your views on what random people on the internet tell you
