Fernandes Sustainer system available seperately - news or ol

Well anyway - I just got a copy of the march issue of UK mag *"guitarist".

On page 20 there's a short article that says that Fernandes will now be selling the sustainer on it's own under the model number FSK-401 it'll cost £299. I'm not sure if you guys all know this or not so I posted this just in case anyone else is as in the dark as me

And what about the Korean PRS?

This may well be very very old news (i don't keep up with things) , and was just a preview, so I look forward to next months review of it.

I actually just ordered a sustainer today. *Cost me $150 USD. *Not too bad, cheaper than buying a new guitar.

As for the Korean PRS, I believe that was NAMM news... look for their stock to go down (see other high end companies who have done the same thing).

Gentlemen -
The sustainer says it's a "high output humbucker"... so I'm assuming humbucker shape with dummy single coil. *

It's going to require some routing in the pickguard, but I plan to put it in my JEM7BSB as of right now.

I ordered it from Music Go Round.

I had frequently considered getting a Fernandes and gutting it for the Sustainer unit, but after reading the Sustainiac site, i'm more inclined to go with their Stealth unit. The Fernandes Sustainer is basically a 2-generations-old Sustainiac. The Sustainiac guys have been doing all kinds of research and development on improving the transducer and the amplification circuit.

I also like that the Sustainiac is really designed to be a retrofit, and comes with push-pull pots for activating it and switching between fundamental and harmonic modes. No ugly mini-switches! (Though you could probably replace at least of the Fernandes' mini-toggles with a push-pull pot.)

Let me know how you like it. What kind of routing do you need to make to the pickguard (other than drilling a couple of holes for the mini-toggles)?

Darren -
The Fernandez system is designed as a complete replacement for your electronics. *It comes with a pickup selector, tone pot, volume pot, sustainer intensity pot, and the mini toggle switch. *I'd have to route a hole for the 3rd pot and the mini toggle. *HOPEFULLY everything else will fit nicely.

What are the sustainer's characteristics exactly?? I've seen a lot of talk about them, but never really understand what they do and how.....

I'd recommend you go to http://www.sustainiac.com and read about the Sustainiac Stealth model. It explains it all there.

In a nutshell, it takes the signal from your bridge pickup, amplifies it, then pumps it out through a magnetic transducer (basically a reverse pickup) in the neck position. The fluctuating magnetic field generated by the transducer excites the strings and gives you "feedback".
