First Rack System Recommendations

I've decided to step into the daunting world of the rack setup, and was hoping if you guys could give me some recommendations as to what units to get etc.

Mainly wanting stuff with an '80s vibe to it, EVH, Richie Sambora, you get the idea. I think this video shows what I'm looking perfectly -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2Pa9aCcyPQ

Thanks

Rocktron looks good. Also been looking at the TC Electronic G-Major 2. Any good?

I prefer voodu valve.
Remember pre is where your guitar tone is so is really better having the best pre first then think about effects.
As voodu valve already comes with effects you'll need nothing more besides a poweramp and a cab.
Or you could buy rocktron piranha pre and xpression (or g major1) for effects.

I've got a H&K switchblade head which I'll be using as a preamp/poweramp, so all I really need is the effects

Why didn't you say that before?
I prefer xpression over tc stuff cause its chorus is a must and its pitch shifter is extremelly in tune and doesn't sound like a broken computer.
If I had to buy a tc effects I'd go with G-System.

Why?

I decided to get a G Major 2 over a G-System cos the latter costs like 3x as much and I didn't see any noticeable difference except that one is a rack and the other is placed on the floor...

Modulation effects(chorus, flanger etc) of gmajor 1 and 2 sound lifeless to me.
To my ears G-System has better modulation effects.
And its midi footcontroller is awesome.
Still I'd go with any rocktron effects processor over tc.
Xpression or intellifex.

Re: First Rack System Recommendations

Hey dude !

I just went rack for the first time recently too - and there is no going back !

I would definately try the ADA MP1 before the rocktron . The 3tube mod version is particularly 80s.

Im running ada mp1 3tm > gmajor > mesa 2:90 poweramp > mesa 2x12 recto cab.

Exquisite sounds ! have a listen at www.myspace.com/esotericdawn

Any help you want tiwth rack info i would be happy to help

Re: First Rack System Recommendations

First off, are you on a budget? All of what has been mentioned will give you that 80'S sound, a little chorus, echo, some flange. I've been there done that!! First rackmount processor was an Alesis Quadraverb and a Korg digital reverb with a Rocktron midi board.
Your off to a good start with your sound H&K Switchblade, I have a H&K TriAmp MKII with two Marshall JCM 900 4x12 cabs. My rack current setup is a Korg DTR 1000 digital tuner, unless you're going to get into some messed up tuning it's not worth spending the extra on the 2000. IMOP, DBX 131 Graphic EQ, Eventide Eclipse, ART PS8 Power Sequencer, and a Behringer FCB 1010 MIDI foot controller. On the floor is a Boss GT-6, MXR EVH flange, MXR EVH Phaser, and a Zack Wylde cry baby.
A good power supply with "clean power" not just a power bar would be a good consideration to have.
Just play around with everything and let your ears decide what you like!! Everything can be tweaked and don't settle on something because it's cheaper, you'll end up being disapointed in the end. The "toys" that are more expensive is for a reason, they have more flexability than the cheaper stuff!!
