Floyed Rose locking or free floating trems?

i see that some of the guitars have locking Floyed Rose trems wich you and only dive down and some that have free floating Floyed Rose trems where you can pull up on to some degree. wich one is better? does one stay in tune better than the other?
when looking at the trem systems on guitars i noticed this. i thought it would be cool to have one that you pull up on too but then i though perhaps there would be issues with the guitar staying in tune. what do you guys think?
ill be ordering a JS1200 shortly and also wanted to know with that trem system will i be able to just dive down with it or will i be able to pull up too? thanks guys.

I think you're confusing the term "locking." Whether you have it floating or not, the Floyd Rose is a locking tremolo system (i.e., you "lock" it at the nut and at the bridge with the allen keys).

With the JS1200, if you set it up correctly, you will be able to go up and down. Refer to Rich's guide at Ibanez Rules (click the banner at the top of the site).

sorry about the confusion here. so the Floyed Rose can be locked or floating? like when i read about the guitar im looking at and if it says
Floyed Rose locking trem i was thinking only for diving down. some say free floating trem.

rich will be the guy i order from so i know the setup will be seccond to none.

Its not a case of locked or floating. It's...

Top mounted/flush-mounted (Dive only)
Fully routed (All the crazy stuff)

Some guitars (Current Chravels, EVH's guitars etc.) have Floyds top mounted for diving only, it doesn't change the fact that it is a double locking system, and as Waylay said, the term locking isn't to do with the floatingness of the trem.

thanks for your input as im still learning. so would the js1200 do all the crazy stuff you mentioned? if so that would be cool with me.

Definately. Any Ibanez with a Floyd style trem would.

-so no unison bends,
-no easy tuning changes (Drop D)
-and you can forget about heavier strings without a full setup.

But that last one is something you are going to want to learn how to do yourself anyway. (Don't leave it up to any tech or store to do this)

I'm not trying to scare you, it's not rocket science, but you're going to have to accept these things are inherent to the design of a floating trem. From your questions it appears to me you need to read a bit more on trems, for example on this site.

+1 to everyone's comments above. The JS1200 will do whatever crazy stuff you want it to but it does come at a price in that you usually will have to take a bit more time with string changes and setups than you would a strat bridge or a hardtail and there are certain things it just won't do, as eviltwin stated. Still, the trade-offs are worth it for the styles of music (EVH and Satch) that you want to play and I've found that if you take the time to properly balance the tension of the strings with the springs and all the other stuff that goes into a setup, the Edge pro almost never goes out of tune. No matter how hard you abuse it, you'll only have to make fine tuner adjustments to it.

My 350 which is tuned to drop C/D standard, switching between the two makes little to no diffrence in my other strings and I only use the fine tuners. It's a magical thing...
