Gear setups - effects or no effects?

Hey, I was just wondering what set up you all used. I mean, do you like using effects or do you prefer to go straight into the amp?

Personally I prefer no effects, the only thing I use is an EQ pedal as a boost for lead work (only because I can't afford a three-channel amp).

Boss GE-7 EQ in the FX loop...the only thing a 5150II needs.

I use a Boss Noise Surpressor and a Boss Super Overdrive. Only practical effects i wouldn't want to use loads of effects as it creates more hassle.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I'm kinda both ways.

I love the way my Laney sounds with just a guitar and maybe a Wah plugged in. But. . .I also like the toys.

I like the minimalist approach of having 1 guitar, 1 amp, . . .But I also dream of having a huge room stocked full of crazy guitars and a tower of amps and cabinets.

I try to keep it minimal, a tubescreamer and sometimes a wah. Lookin to add some chorus and delay though.
Got a Bass synth pedal which is great but havent found the right time to use it yet. Got a Boss Octave pedal which is great but again cant seems to slot it in.

I've just got a wah right now. Looking into getting a BBE Sonic Maximizer. I'd love to have stomps but I can't afford each pedal so I might get a Rocktron XPRESSION for the delay, chorus, flanger, etc. An EQ pedal would be nice too.

I use the minimal setup. Either plug straight in or use a wah. I want to get a delay though.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

With the right amp, that's all I need is the amp. The only effects I would want to use would be a delay sometimes and a chorus for clean sounds. The amp should also have a good spring reverb too. Even with my GT8, my main sounds are just preamp sims (which simulate a mic'd amp) and reverb.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

ok, generally i have 4 or 5 distortions, 3 delays and two reverbs. does the job fine for me...you can make any dound you want with that combo, i try to steer away from wahs, as too many people use them to mask a lack of playing ability...used well tho, theyre awsome, i just dont want one..

I agree which is why programmable multi FX units (pedal or rack based) are a God send. At least you can change a lot of effects with just one foot stomp.

Regarding minimalism, I'd go so far as to say that if you have to use a distortion pedal in front of your amp, the amp isn't made right. The "right" amp needs nothing to get the job done which is why I've always had a penchant for Boogies because they've always been the only amp I could do that with.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I've never used effects loops. I just have three pedals in front, MXR Phase 90, DigiTech Bad Monkey and a Hush The Pedal noise gate.

Re: Gear setups - effects or no effects?

I use a G-Major for most of my effects. But also have several Boss pedals including a noise supressor, chorus, digital delay and DS1. Also have a whammy pedal and Bad Horsie 2 wah. Mind you, I only have the G-Major and Bad Horsie hooked up to my amp at the mo, however as my Engl has a great tone and descent reverb, the g-major is bypassed most of the time!!!
