Getting that Satch sound with your DS-1?

I was just curious what you guys use for your "Satch Tone".

More specifically, do you use a DS-1, and with what settings? And with
What Amplifier?

I recently picked up a DS-1 that I'm modding just to play with...but I
in no way get a Satch tone out of it. But then again, I'm also not running
it through vintage Marshalls and such.

So I'm just curious if you have captured something like the Satch tone
with DS-1, or if not, what have you done it with?

Right now I'm using a Rocktron Chamelion through an old tube amp
from the 60s that I pulled out of the trash. And for a little bit more
bottom end (the tube amp has really small paper 12") I have a Laney
2X12 cab connected through the "Remote Speaker" terminal. While
I'm not 100% happy with it, I just spent about 8 hours on two dozen
different amps and rack gear at Guitar Center and Sam Ash, and I can't
find anything better then what I have for less then $2000!! Actually, I had
trouble finding anything even at that price!

I can get a pretty close tone with my DS-1 into my Fender solid state princton 65. I'm sure the tubes make all the difference...but I can't afford tubes right now. I have the dist and volume at max and my tone knob in the middle. I have my bass around 4-5 my treble about 8 and my mids all the way up. I'm usin a JS1000BTB with a Tone Zone in the bridge and a Air Norton in the neck.

Wow, my dad has that same amp in his recording studio! I'll have to try
that out!

I'm thinking about trying a Tone Zone in my Root Beer Jem. I'm not
happy with the bridge sound of a PAF Pro, but I LOVE the Pro in the
neck position!

yeah the Tone Zone is pretty much a Fred or Paf Pro with balls. I like it...mean, agressive, just totally all out! It's great, not the best clean in the world. But you can get around that easily by rolling your volume down a little or making it sound really cool with a slighty dist bridge and a really clean neck. Sounds amazing...I love this pickup.

by the way....what kind of tones are you getting with the mods?

In that other thread I've posted about the LED mods. While they do
open up the volume a little bit, they also don't have as much (apparent)
compression or "buzz/fuzz" to the sound. It's more of a hotrodded
blues pedal with LEDs. And honestly, not exactly what I'm looking for.

I hate to use this example, but this is the only thing I can think of that
comes to mind.

My (example) goal, is to have more of a tight, compressed, but still
sensitive and percussive buzz to the tone. Where every nuance of your
touch on the strings is heard. But....I'd like it to still be rich in harmonics,
and not so brittle on the high end. Right now, the stock MIT DS-1 (IMHO)
is a bit loose with the sound (needs more compression), and is rather
brittle on the high end, the closer you tune it to that Satch tone.

Tonight I'm going to buy a bag of Diodes and LEDs, and I'm going to hit
this project again. When I'm done, I'm hoping to have a setup with a
three way switch on the top of the pedal, that will switch between "stock"
Diode, Modded Diode, and Modded LED.

If the project comes out well, I'd love to ship it out to someone, have them
give it a listen, and then have them pass it on to someone else from
the forums. While this involves a lot of trust, I've done this very
successfully on other web board with other projects I've worked on.
It's actually a lot of fun, and a great way to get experienced feedback.

Since this pedal only cost me $25 used, and maybe an extra $5-10 in
modding parts...I'm not worried about losing it too terribly much. Now if
it was a MIJ, that would be another story!
