I liked how he called his Greenbacks "cheapy" but then pimps some low grade Celestions.

Honestly... if that's the price range you're in, the standard Peavey 412s (NOT THE 5150!!!) are pretty well-made. *The speakers are not bad if you don't play too much clean. *I actually think I may keep my Peavey cab and just put better speakers in it. *I paid $200 for mine new, you could easily get one new under $300.

See if you can find a 1960 AV Marshall cab used. They come with either vintage celestions or greenbacks. They are *$1200 list for each cab (sell for $839.00 thru Musicians Friend) and I am sure you could get a used cab for under $600 or so. Musicians Friend lists them as coming with only the celestions but you can request greenbacks.

Dont mistake this cab for the 1960 Marshall cab that has regular speakers loaded in it. You will notice about a $500 price difference (and a huge difference in tone). Musicians Friend does not carry many of these cabs in stock believe it or not!! When I ordered mine through them they had ONE cab in their ENTIRE inventory from all of their stores!!! It is DEFINITELY worth the little extra green though!! It also has an impedance (4 or 16 ohm) mono/stereo switching mechanism in it that spices it up a bit.

Here is a link to the sale ad on Musicians Friend:

You will NEVER regret getting this cab!!!

Not to degrade the Marshall name at all... but I find it amusing, that everyone used to try to copy the design of the Marshall cab because of its incredible tone... and in the end, the only reason it was designed that way was to keep it smaller for more cost-effective shipping.

I'll 2nd the Peavey MS412 cab. *For that price range, they are the beefiest sounding 412 cabs on the market. *Harsh on Peavey all you want, but there's plenty of good tone in those cabs.

There are also 2 different sizes of cabs in the Marshall world. The Valvestate cabs are much smaller than the normal cab. I am not too hip on those cabs. I see no difference in size between my 1960AV cab and every other cab I have owned though.

I use to own a Peavey full stack (metal grill, stereo cabs, chefield loaded). Those things weighed a TON but were killer sounding cabs!!! I went with the Marshall 1960AV in the end because I got the tone from the Peavey full stack in one cab and saved my back from a severe chiropractic realignment every couple months!! *

I really like my Marshall cabs. *I own 3 4x12's and I love the lower watt speakers. *The Vintage 30's are to die for. *With high wattage cabs it takes a lot of loud power to get them really working. *So unless you plan to use your Marshall cab at a 10,000+ arena, I suggest the lower wattage cabs.

If I was to do it all over again I'd buy Legacy 4x12's. *Much cheaper and sound better IMHO. *I like the stereo switching options on the Marshalls and that's really what keeps me from selling them and getting Legacy's.

I agree. I have not really gotten to A/B the Legacy against the Marshall loaded with greenbacks but I figured they would sound pretty much identical because of the similar size and speakers.

It got to the point also that every show I went to with the full stack the sound guy would just give me "that look" and basically I would know that I would be out of the mix for the evening no matter how I turned my cabs. (Sound guys HATE full stacks in clubs) They hate it when we guitar players take away the thunder from their "monster PA systems") *

Didnt the Legacy cabs use to come with greenbacks in them? The last time I checked the Carvin page it said celestion equipped. Is this a typo or did they change them?

I wonder if this was something that Vai requested or if they are just changing his original design because of corporate decisions.

I noticed that companies do that quite often when an artist endorces something thru them. For instance the ORIGINAL 5150 head. The 2nd or 3rd year it came out there was a definate sound difference (as well as a price drop). The price drop usually indicates that they are using some cheaper parts in order to make the item more affordable but this changes the sound of the original product.

The story with the Whammy pedal is sort of along the same lines. I heard with the pedal though they were not able to get the same chip used in the original pedal because of some sort of copyright or something.

The vintage 30's are killer speakers so Carvin did not go cheaper but they did change the original design from Steve. *Again I wonder if this was per his request or just because Carvin could either get a better deal on the vintage 30's or had overwhelming requests for the change?

Steve seemed pretty happy with the greenback's at first so I wonder which ones he would prefer to use?

Hey,

Laney cabs rock. I got one after hearing bad stuff about Marshall cabs. I now have Celestion Vintage 30's in mine (and they sound sweet!!).

Apparently they are much more durable than Marshall's but because they are a bit beefier i think they sound a bit bassy. This sounds amazing for riffs and solos but maybe the clean fans out there might dislike this.

I say get a Laney and change the speakers,

just my opinion,
Mark.

Something to remember when loading that perfect cab when you find it…. The higher wattage the speaker is, the slower the cone response and the muddier the low end will sound.

Cheap low watt speakers are good for guitar. Among the low watt speakers there are many different characteristics and each will choose his own favorite (mostly greenbacks), but if you can find a good cab with really crappy speakers, you will probably be happy.

One drawback to the lower wattage speaker is that the cone heats up faster. This also causes a muddy sound.

What is a player to do???

Try Genz Benz. *They are pretty affordable and make nice cabinets. *I use a 212 Flex, it's now the G-Flex, George Lynch cabinet. *Huge sound from a 2-12 but them also make 4-12s and they are reasonably priced. *They can probably put you in touch with a local or semi local dealer. *

If the cabinet comes with their 1240-V75 speakers, it's not worth upgrading to Celestions either, it has the same cone as the V30s if I remember right. *They do sound good, that's what I have. *

Back me up on this Bamm Bamm.

Yes I'm wondering why Carvin swapped speakers as well....I'm thinking of loaing mine up with Greenbacks to see how it sounds.
