Re: good metal distortion pedal
Eh metal Muff is what i am using on a tube amp and it gets the job done...
Like stated previously, most of the pedals you buy will only satisfy you for about a week,,
I love mine but I will probably buy a O/D pedal and EQ pedal too..
Thats pretty much what most people do..

My opinion is that distortion should come from the amp, but other than that...
Quoted for truth. Distortion pedals sound be used to add a different flavour to an awesome amp. In my opinion anyways.
However if you need one go for this:

or failing that this:

Or if you don't like the concept of spending several hundred dollars (I believe they list for $500?) find a used Boss MD-2. Boss' best distortion pedal for metal. I don't think they make it anymore but you should be able to find one.

Re: good metal distortion pedal
soldano supercharger.
that has way more gain than you should ever need.
BUT
you might want to add an eq after it if you're after scooped metal sounds.

Re: good metal distortion pedal
I have always found the little Zoom multi-FX processors to have excellent distortion sounds. Quite fun to play with. The Boss Metal-series stompbox units have a good reputation amongst many, although I've never really had any experience with those.
There again it depends what you are looking for. A multi-FX unit is good for the home musician. If you're gigging you're better getting a stonking great JCM800 or 900 turned up so loud that the windows shatter and the roof blows off when you play the opening chord of the first song

Re: good metal distortion pedal
You cant beat an amps distortion and it also depends what kind of amp your going to be playing out of.
As for myself, the best pedal I played coming out of a tube amp was the Metal Mayhem. check it out. Crunchy, Clean, Loud GREAT! I play thrash, old school death metal. so it works great for me.

Re: good metal distortion pedal
I was in the same boat as you. I can tell you this. Boss all the way. MT-2 sounds the best. Digitech sounded like a tin can. And i never got into Line 6.

Re: good metal distortion pedal
I just tried out the Digitech Hardwire CM-2 Tube Overdrive with my Blackstar HT-5, and got some of the most brutal distortion with no unwanted noise. Was bliss.

Re: good metal distortion pedal
Interesting to see that the opinions on the MT-2 have come full circle. Just a few years ago they were always called fizzy and lifeless!!! A few years before that they were all the rage!
Personally I like a Boss DS-1 into a Mesa amp. Works for me

Re: good metal distortion pedal
I never liked any distortion pedal cause I play from bluesy tones to metal tones.
For bluesy tones pedals works but for hi gain they all sound like crap to me.
The only thing I had which I liked its distortion(because I didn't have a tube amp) was a digitech rp21.That rp line was cool BUT when they released that rp2000 with amp simulation I thought man I'll love it.I bought it.
Crappest pedal I bought in my life, sold in 1 week, all models which came after that rp2000 sound terrible TO ME.
So digitech died to me.
About boss metal pedals = NO THANKS !

You seriously need to try the Hardwire line that Digitech created. Seriously, a whole other world frmo Digitech. They are top quality.

Re: good metal distortion pedal
I only messed about with one of these briefly, but was very impressed, the Tone Freak Severe:
http://www.tonefreak.com/Severe.html
As has been mentioned, the real trick to getting a great metal tone out of a pedal is to use an eq pedal after it.
