good metal distortion pedal

I am looking for a modern distortion (metallica, slipknot etc). I have heard really good things about the Blackstar ht dist-x. Is it really good for both riffs and solos? Are there other metal distortion pedals that are better than the dist-x?

The Blackstar gear is awesome. Also check out the Digitech HardWire series, they have a mean metal distortion pedal, and MXR have a new one too.

I heard the Boss metal distortion series and the EHX Metal Muff sounds thin. Is it true?

The Metal Muff doesn't have quite enough gain for modern metal sounds, to my ears. It's more than capable of producing decent metal tones but flat out it starts to get mushy and unpleasant.

Re: good metal distortion pedal

There's no such thing as a good metal distortion pedal says the death metal guitarist. I've tried them all at one point or another, Line 6 uber, rocktron metal planet, digitech Metal master and death metal, boss metalzone, and they are entertaining for a while, but none were able to keep my tone appetite settled for very long. My opinion is that distortion should come from the amp, but other than that, I'd recommend the Digitech DF-7.

Re: good metal distortion pedal

I can chime in on that,... Amp distortion is better almost all of the time. The blackstar pedals however, are my favourite if I'd HAVE to use a pedal.

Re: good metal distortion pedal

It sounds ok for rhythm sounds ( especially the last section of the vid, with the mids turned up ).
The leads are horribly thin. And I'd suspect the pedal not being much use live due to its spectrum.
It seems voiced for the "teen-metal"-guitarist who wants a big tone in the house and feel evil while doing so. Yes, it will give a kick riffing out on one of these, but they're just not that practical in my book.

Re: good metal distortion pedal

Blackstar Dist-x by a country mile. Valve sound, more gain than you will ever need and it scythes through the din of a band. I've been very impressed with mine. I use a EHX LPB-1 to boost solo's, it sounds simply awesome. It's one of the best setups i've ever had. I'm extremely impressed with it.

Re: good metal distortion pedal

I don't like distortion pedals but there's one which came through all others I've played.
Digitech The Weapon.
It has different really good sounds like sitar and flange ,plus it has an awesome speaker simulator.
Search through my reviews and you'll see it.
You can go to digitech website and listen to audio samples which are very good.

Re: good metal distortion pedal

I'm getting an MXR Fullbore soon and I'll let you know what it's like. I have a feeling the video demo (which sounds awesome) exaggerates the pedal's qualities a bit, and perhaps you can get much more subtle and complex sounds out of it too. We shall see!

Re: good metal distortion pedal

In my experiance most distorsion pedals are pretty good for what they are.
the mistake most people make and the fib that all salesmen tell is that "This pedal will make a lousy amp sound good!"
no pedal will fix a solid state amp or a poorly EQ'd/preamp'd tube amp
I use a Rat through a mesa mkIII (non simul) great sound...but loud! way loud
though my old Mk III simul sounded better..
nothing will fix a peavy.
no pedal will make a fender amp sound like a marshall and satisfy you for more than a week.
dsl's don't need much at all cept maybe a little compression and a good delay

Oh yea........one more thing that helps ALOT! ;
learn the term "Headroom" find out what it means and live it!
