Ordered Classic Lead speakers a couple weeks ago as I had posted. Decided to go with them over the V30s simply due to the higher power handling and the fact that I have a Marshall Major which needs it.
They came in yesterday, so I installed them last night. Tried 'em out for 30 minutes before class this morning.
What a huge difference speakers make!
I figured some of the harsh tones were those 75 watt celestions I had before, but I had no idea that all the harshness was just from the speakers. Plus the 75s are very fizzy sounding speakers - the Classic Leads are very smooth!
The 75s have very harsh mids and highs - at one point they did not have enough highs and I turn my presence up 30 minutes and that turned to ear piercing high. The mids were lacking and very harsh too.
Plus, even with the Burstbucker I & II in my
Les Paul now, I could not get a
clean tone from my JCM 900 SL-X. Now I can get a pretty good perfectly clean tone from my Les Paul, strat, and my Jem!
I found that all the tone controls work well on 5 (12 oclock) but if I dime my presence and treble, it adds presence and treble without ever getting harsh.
For those not familiar with the Classic Leads, they sound closer to a Vintage 30 than anything but they are definitely smoother and I am pretty sure I like them better than my Vintage 30 in my Studio 15 (which was specifically designed for that amp keep in mind!), even in the 30 minutes I've played them so far!
